Classical Recordings Quarterly [CRQ] - Winter

Anyone who does not already subscribe to this magazine might like to see this edition for its set of articles which are particularly interesting. The web address is given for anyone wishing to subscribe.

PS: the Strauss article has some things to say about DG's early use of the "Light Ray" microphone [ref the Acoustic Recording thread] and recording system which they dropped in 1927 in favour of the WE system. It seems that it didn't work too well!

"...from December 1926, DG had replaced the General Electric process with the Western Electric recording system, which offered a remarkably wider and smoother frequency range."

And a very interesting new double CD issue of recordings by the Virtuoso Quartet, which I received this morning.

Do you perhaps mean the CD set, not the magazine??

I can confirm Gordon's recommendation - I have changed my subscription to the downloadable version. I have taken it this way for two years already and prefer it so.
I can highly recommend it. I saves a few quid, 20 pounds a year, and it is easy to use.
A great magazine for anyone interested in historical and analogue recordings. The articles are always interesting and well written.
This magazine needs new subscribers or it will disappear.
One can download a past issue free of charge to sample the journal.
I am not connected to CRQ in any way, I just want it to continue.

The magazine, which I really look forward to.

I just changed my IRR subscription to the digital and I miss the feel of the magazine. CRQ specializes in Historical Recordings, and it seems odd to use new technology to read about them

Interesting, Richard...I have been deliberating as to whether to switch my IRR subscription to digital, but hesitate for the same reason you mention. It would cost about half the price, but there is something about having the real magazine in your hands and to be honest, I spend more than enough time already in front of the computer.

Depending on how patient you are to wait for the paper to arrive, if you'd PM me with an email I'll send you the latest pdf. You've got one coming anyway so I don't think that Alan would be upset if you got both versions!

I'm enjoying this set, but be warned that the recordings are from 1924 to 1927, with varying amounts of surface noise, and so perhaps not for repeated everyday listening.

Difficult for such enterprises to now survive when far more info is 'freely' available; and the current contents don't justify 25 quid, to me, when, overwhelmingly, they're CD Reviews: far different to ICRC 1995<.

If CRC/CRQ ever turn up cheap on ebay (a decade back got ICRC/CRC issues 1-26 for under £14 inc; far less than I paid for #2-7) then I'll get'em: there are few competing auction-style bidders for such material..LOL

Just had notification that CRQ has ended.

As I am mid-subscription they have offered some back issues as compensation. Very much enjoyed this magazine over the last few years.

                              Also had just re-subscribed.

They've not offered me anything (yet). I've got every issue on the shelf anyway.

Perhps they might offer their CDs?
