Pierre Boulez: The Complete Columbia Album Collection

Saw this interesting read from the NYT on the Sony Classical issue of the 67-CD (!) set of recordings that Boulez made for the Columbia label back in the day. David Allen does dwell on the New Philharmonia recording of LvB 5 on a micro-level, but it's also interesting to read this as the rationale for issuing such a set, which seems to be the case with many 'compleatist' classical issues these days:

"Bogdan Roscic, the president of Sony Music Masterworks, said that with Mr. Boulez’s 90th birthday approaching next March, 'we wanted to present as complete a picture as we could of his work as a conductor."......

Lumbered with long back catalogs and shrinking demand, record companies have let loose a deluge of boxed sets, often covering the complete careers of conductors, pianists, singers and everything in between. These are niche products, but often successful ones. Mr. Roscic said that the target audience for such sets is the collector’s market, 'people who appreciate an authoritative career overview,' listeners who already have many but not all of the recordings in a new box — or none at all."
I must acknowledge that I haven't bought this set yet, although on Amazon, its sales rank under 'Classical' is 62, as of this moment. I've certainly heard a number of PB's past Columbia recordings on Sony CD issues, as well as the odd LP.

I shall order it tomorrow, even though I have some of them already on vinyl. These huge boxes of CDs make a serious dent in the wallet, but are none the less amazing value. It will have to join the queue behind the complete Maria Callas, the complete RCA Toscanini and the huge reissue of Decca's finest. Oh well, what the hell, I dont have a mortgage and who needs food, anyway?

      Be warned!
      No texts supplied.
Also, not quite complete, as some material previously issued (and listed in the contents on the Presto site) seems not to be included: specifically Ravel's (orchestral) Sheherezade (i.e., Ouverture de feerie) and the Fanfare pour L'Eventail de Jeanne, both of which were in the 3CD Ravel orchestral works set SM3K 45842.

        Thanks Pulcinella.
This is one of the very rare occurrences that I might be tempted to go for a massive multi-cd set dedicated to only one conductor.

I was very tempted by this set even though it would have meant considerable duplication. However, the lack of texts is a significant drawback (as a look at the list of contents will show) and I quickly lost interest, keeping the original CDs (complete with texts) and sourcing those missing second hand.

A missed opportunity and a case of spoiling the ship for a ha'p'orth of tar if ever there was one. I'd have been willing to pay more for texts.

PITA the given the repertoire not to have texts. Why they can't stick in CD ROM I will never understand

No doubt the excuse would be made that it would bump up the cost but I'd be more willing to part with my cash with texts provided on a CD ROM than have it cheaper with no texts at all. Given the repertoire finding alternative sources for the sung/spoken texts is no easy matter.

Agreed. And given the nature of the product and repertoire, it's not being aimed at folk who would object to another £1 or so for the CD ROM....

I have no objection to no texts where the texts are public domain and/or easy to find. But that's not true for this music!
