Why won't they release it?

Hi Alison, my Thorens/Linn vinyl deck is currently partly disassembled awaiting re-cabling with a higher quality alternative to the excuse for signal transfer that it came supplied with. However, once back in order I intend to do what I can to digitise the Loughran LP box of Beethoven Symphonies I purchased from a charity shop last year. The LPs appear to be in very good condition. I will try to remember your desire/need when the time comes.

      (On Melodyia!!)

Followed by Sir Adrian Boult's recording of Elgar 2 with the SNO. AFAIK, It's never made it to cd.
Well, regarding the Oistrakh, there's still no sign of it being released on cd despite two letters in Gramophone asking Melodyia to get their finger out. The only way I get to hear it now is to fire up my Sony reel to reel machine which, I have to admit, sounds pretty bloody fantastic!

That's great - thanks for the info. However, it seems that it's not rated (on here, at least, very highly) I gave my CfP vinyl away about 20+ years ago, and really have no recollection of what I thought at the time...

The 12th seems to be very neglected, my now rather out of date Penguin Guides from 2005 and 2010 dont list any individual recordings, though it would be present in the several complete sets. I suspect the Pretre version never made it to CD. Pity, you could hardly find a better orchestra than the Philharmonia. In fact, I wonder if the recording is so good that EMI wont release it because it would take away sales from their more recent recordings. Its dated 1963, but with modern remastering the sound should be very acceptable.

Well, if they were to rerelease it, I would certainly take up on it. Even if just to hear again for myself... and make my now, more mature (hopefully! ) assessment of it.

There seems to be a lack of interest in Tippet's music just now, Beefy. Similar to the lack of interest in Elgar's music after he died. Maybe, say thirty years, will see a renaissance.

Igor Oistrakh was 85 in April - an anniversary that seems to have passed unnoticed but could have led to a boxed reissue?

The Maazel Tchaikovsky was reissued with the Sibelius Symphonies in 2014. Decca are rather shy when it comes to giving details of re-mastering, so no details are given However, the Sibelius has certainly been re-done very effectively, as I was able to compare it with previous incarnations. I used to have the Tchaikovsky on LP, but not on CD, so I am unable to compare, although the sound on this set is very fine indeed.

Yes, I bought the Sibelius and the sound is very good indeed. But as you say, no mastering details.

Thanks for the steer on the Tchaikovsky. Two separate sets (1-3 & 4-6) 2014. A bit prices on Amazon almost £71 on both sets (looks like Petrushka has a point about Amazon prices!). No details on mastering.

Well they are SHM-CDs, and even the marketplace prices are at something of a premium.

The Brexit-inspired fall in sterling doesn't help but the extremely reliable www.cdjapan.co.jp will supply the Maazel Tchaikovsky for rather less than the Amazon prices. See:

Lorin Maazel,Tchaikovsky: The Symphonies Nos.1-3,CD Album listed at CDJapan! Get it delivered safely by SAL, EMS, FedEx and save with CDJapan Rewards!

As long as you opt for Registered Air Mail or Air Mail shipping, you shouldn't be bothered with Customs - they simply arrive in the post (EMS is to be avoided at all costs as it ends up with Parcelforce in the UK/Chronopost in France when you will have to pay duty/VAT plus a "handling charge").

I have other Maazel SHM-CDs and they have been carefully re-mastered. The big Decca VPO box contains the fourth symphony which sounds as if it were recorded yesterday (and which will, I am 99% certain, have used the same masterings as in the Japanese releases).

Ah, thanks. I had a suspicion they were SHM-CDs, but I wasn't sure.

Many thanks for this, I have them in my check out, ready to purchase but I'm not sure about the shipping options. SAL Small Packet is the cheapest, does that stand much chance of avoiding customs?

Registered SAL looks like a good option.
