CDs, downloads, streaming

Most of my listening is via Spoitfy but of the dozen or so downloads I've purchased, a fair proportion were faulty in one way or another.

I also might spend some time re-tagging the tracks although it could be argued I'm only doing that because I can.

Another thing I don't get is the oft-expresssed grumble that record companies are trying to get something for nothing. That may be true of the profligate and shortsighted majors with their endelssly recycled back catalogues, but is it true of the independents? Take BIS's Robert von Bahr. He's spent his life building a very successful record company. Bear in mind, also, that it's his money and foresight that gives us all those wonderful recordings. And given the niche nature of the business - where album sales are measured in very small numbers - to stay with it requires great dedication and courage. I wholeheartedly support these independents - I rarely buy or review UMG, Warner or Sony product any more - and I think we all need to be a hell of a lot more grateful to people like Robert, who continue to enrich our lives in so many ways.

True, I do buy a fair few bargain priced boxed sets from those stables but when it comes to full priced new releases it is almost always the indies I go for.

Essential for their back catalogues, no question, but very little of interest these days. Of course they were all we had in them thar days; now we have all these enterprising indies and orchestras' own labels. Dang, we've never had it so good :)

I've been purchasing many of the back catalogue boxed set issues from DeutscheDeccaMI for some years now in the expectation that in, say, five years time whole swathes of this stuff will be deleted and end up as download only. CDs will be with us for decades to come due to the sheer number out there and I've got more than enough to see me out.

I burn all my downloads to cd with every intention of placing them in jewel cases with proper inserts and printed off info.
Unfortunately I only get as far as sticking them in cd wallets with the work and artist details on a post it note or label
They just don't look good on a shelf,which is why they are hidden away in the spare room!

Those interested in the sort of random and extreme squeaky gate noises one hears at Cafe OTO might like to consider a subscription to their "digital membership". For £10 a month, or £100 a year, you get credits for 3 downloads of their concert recordings a month (the credits roll over - at the moment I am busy using some of the 42 I have accumulated over the months). There are also downloads available from related labels such as Matchless Recordings which may be purchased using one's credits (in the order of 2 credits per CD's worth). You get a choice of high data rate mp3 or FLAC for the same price.

[I might have misjudged the number of credits required per Matchless download. It might be just the one. Anyway, I have now downloaded quite enough for the moment. I am finishing off with Merzbow from last October (around 105 minutes worth of 24 bit FLAC for a single credit)]. The Cafe OTO's own recordings tend to be 48/24, and the Matchless are CD rate.

I've made a template on OvationPro, so I can drop in a JPEG of the artwork and type the details along the spine. It then looks like the real thing.
