CDs, downloads, streaming

I don't regard myself as a 'Disgusted, Tunbridge Wells' person at all, nor a fetishist for plastic boxes! I am sure you are right that companies will increasingly ditch physical media. I have nothing against those who prefer downloads, but they are just not for me - not at the moment, anyway, because being a bit of a technophobe, I simply don't have the know-how like many of you.

We have had ebooks for years, but physical books are doing really quite well, both in mass and niche markets.

In order to make money,publishers have to maximise all revenue streams. The same will likely remain true for record companies.

I don't mind downloads at all. Al though I do like the physical aspect of the CD. But as regards to space, downloads do seem the answer!

If you're 'on the road' a lot, downloads probably make more sense. I travel a fair bit but I've never liked them, for the reasons MickyD gives above: there is not the same feeling of 'ownership' and technology can (and does) go wrong. I can't be bothered with the fol-de-rol of making backup copies, burning them to CDs, etc.

Should they stop manufacturing CDs - well, I think I've got enuff CDs on the shelves to last at least the rest of my life - and then some ...

I have several downloads - it's just that I don't seem to play them very often. CDs (and books) on shelves ... turns yer 'ouse into an 'oam! Downloads might well be "the future", but they're not mine.

What's wrong with burning one's downloads to CD-Rs or recordable DVDs. That's what I often do, with extended works and 96/24 downloads being those that get the Audio DVD Creator treatment.

OK, OK! I know when I'm beaten. My increasingly groaning shelves (and floor space) are testament to the fact that I'm addicted to buying CDs, too. But, there is something quite simple about having a library of music on my MacBook(s) which, with a click and setting my pre-amp to the correct input using a remote control, produces music. Easier than inserting/withdrawing a CD. More seriously, where digital storage is particularly valuable is the ease of storage of off-air recordings which in my case are downloads, courtesy of the great kindness of certain forumistas. There is so much available online of at least reasonable (i.e. CD) quality of wonderful music-making that it would be a great shame not to preserve at least some of it for one's lasting pleasure.

Me, too - all my downloads have been burnt to CD. They still get played less frequently - unless that is the only recording of the work there is - than my "proper" CDs (and even my neatest handwriting on the spine of the white label doesn't look nearly as attractive as professional labels, so I keep downloaded CDs behind the "proper" ones on the shelf.

I gave up doing that some years ago! I just received a CD I agreed to write a review of, and realise that the only working CD player I now have is in the car. I guess I could drive round the block a few times while taking notes for the review, but I don't think that's very ecologically responsible, plus the prang potential would be considerable.

- sounds like how Birtwistle studied the Wagner operas (prior to writing Gawain); not having a record/tape/CD player in the house, he got Sheila to drive him round in their car whilst he listened to the tapes with the scores.
