I winder why not with the BBCSSO, given the acclaim their performances garnered? (Do the BBC orchestras make commercial recordings?)

Yes - the BBCSO recorded the Martinu Symphonies for this very label. Good question: their Live performances of these works have been magnificent.

The BBCSSO has made many records - but with Hyperion and as the RVW cycle is with Onyx perhaps they are contracted to Hyperion for commercial releases?

They've actually got a fairly long list of recordings with Hyperion, who have also recorded Manze in his role as conductor - with the BBCSSO! So one has to wonder why they haven't recorded the VW symphonies with the same team - it can't be because orchestra & conductor are under contract to different recording companies (although they might be now - there are no dates on the list of recordings on Hypewrion's website.

Another reason might be that Manze is no longer associated with the BBCSSO as a conductor - his time as Associate Guest Conductor ended in August.

Still, the BBC recorded all the performances - I did wonder why they weren't released at least as BBCMM cover discs - presumably Manze had the forthcoming cycle lined up & didn't want it to be 'spoiled' by the release of other performances.

Is this yet another example of people buying the same works again and again?

Do we really need another RVW cycle at this point? Can't someone like Manze put his talent to use on ignored music?

I suppose there's no incentive, if the classical music buyer really only wants more of the same, all the time.

The otherwise enthusiastic response here suggests that indeed there is a market for such a set, not leqst among those who saw/heard Manze's Proms performances of symphonies 4, 5 & 6 with BBCSSO in one evening a few Summers ago
