BaL 9.04.11 - Beethoven: Violin Concerto

I've only just seen this - much too late, I'm afraid.
Great performance from Kremer et al...I LOVE the Schnittke cadenza!
But for me the whole thing is ruined by a dreadful 'sub-sonic' hum in the sound, especially in the first movement.
I've 'tried everything' - listened on different equipment, on computer speakers, on headphones etc. Maybe the fault is in the actual CD itself?

Well it would not be the Janine Jansens for me . I was very impressed by her Brahms and Bartok coupling and the classic Mendelssohn/Bruch 1 coupling with Chailly is also very fine .

I struggled with this though - not really due to JJ but the accompaniment - far too brusque and perfunctory for my taste . I do not want images of invading armies to come to mind whenever the timpani plays as here ! HIPP is one thing but this just strikes me as unmusical .

This is just one of those pieces where one of the first recordings I heard (Oistrakh/Cluytens) is just so idiomatic sounding to me that I haven't bothered with to many other versions. I did purchase Suk/Boult a few years back because of the great admiration that I have for Soloist and Conductor and it is very good but the cadenzas are not Kreisler and I really prefer those.
The only other one in my collection is the 1944 Furtwangler led version with the then BPO Concertmaster

After all these years, I've just bought the Suk and I'm a bit disappointed, it's really not the slow speed, it just feels stodgy and the tempo is a bit unstable at times in the last movement. I'll give it another go but I think it's not for me

One thing that staggers me is Kreisler's amazing cadenza for this work, with it's stunning counterpoint.

(With my list of superlatives I might apply for a job as a Radio 3 presenter.)

Which Suk? I think there were 3 in the original listing.
The contribution of the Conductor in this piece is critical. It has to sound like a Symphonic work by Beethoven that happens to feature a prominent Violin part, rather than a vehicle for a star soloist with an Orchestral part that has been phoned in. The Suk with Sir Adrian doesn't sound like that, but it is a bit on the slow side, more like Klemperer's Beethoven than Szell

Yes, I think his interweaving of the two tunes in the first mvmt was probably the best thing he wrote.
