Elgar's Dream of Gerontius had been a disappointment until Britten's recording breathed life into it.

      I'm with you there, 100%
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I was turned off Schubert at an early age - 10 years I think - there were Symphony Orchestra concerts offered for all primary school children that I mostly enjoyed, but I'm afraid Schubert's 8th Symphony remained unfinished for me because I fell asleep............ 10 years later and I heard Richter's D960 (Melodia) & Collegium Aureum's D810 (not quite sure which first, I think Richter) & I was sold completely & forever!

Heifetz in the Elgar concerto, I like a few performances now but it was his fabulous performance that convinced me about the piece.

The Martinů symphonies as recorded by Jiří Bělohlávek and the BBCSO on Onyx.

I'm sorry to say I thought Beethoven's 4th Symphony dull until I tried a charity shop LP of Karajan's BPO 60s recording. Now the CD is still frequently reached for, though I have 3 or 4 other versions I enjoy, most recently Ivan Fischer and his BFO.

Resurrecting this Thread, which I'd half (and not exactly correctly) -remembered, in light of last Saturday's Building a Library. For decades, the RVW London Symphony was an "alright - but not nearly as good as what came later" work, and I really could not understand why others thought it was one of the best. Well, finally - and thankfully - everything has clicked into place and I've listened to the various recordings I have with great pleasure each time.

The orchestral details in the excerpts from the Handley recording really caught my attention on Saturday - but the recording that has given me the most enjoyment turns out to be one that I've owned for nearly thirty years, and have played at least eight times in that period without it making the same impact as it has this time: Barbirolli and the Hallé.

Which transfer do you have? I have a (legal) download of an "unofficial" Italian transfer. The sounds is reasonable but I have often wondered if I should upgrade. It does come with a terrific Beethoven 3 (BBC PO)

I have the Great Conductors of the Century EMI release . I assume that is the studio Beethoven 3 now on Barbirolli Society not a relay of the concert performance that led the orchestra to press for him to record it with them .

Schumann's Second Symphony. I always enjoyed the others but I simply didn't react to this one. Then by chance I stumbled on Ansermet and the Suisse Romande and everything fell into place.
I don't quite understand why, as I doubt if this version would be very high on critical lists, but thank you Ernest!

I responded decidedly negatively to the original Kronos recording of Different Trains. The interaction of the samples and the string body of the Lyon recording just seemed to meld in such a way that I finally warmed to the work. I have since found the recording by the Smith Quartet to similarly work for me, but the Kronos recording I continue to find something of a turn off.

I am afraid I find Reich's music to be unlistenable .

The BBC music magazine cover CD of Mahler's Tenth, BBCNOW/Mark Wigglesworth opened the door on a work I now rank as an absolute favourite. Rattle and Chailly had never quite won me over.
