The recording that switched the light on a work you thought you did not like much

    Mahler 2 Stuttgart RSO/Barbirolli

Klemps too staid , Rattle too episodic . This live recording for all its faults of ensemble gripped me by the ears and now I love the work to bits and Walter,Jurowski, Nott , Abbado , Barbirolli (twice more)and Klemperer live have joined the throng .

What recording opened your ears to a work you did not like ?

PS Have I started a thread on this before ? If so please merge !

The splendour of Tchaikovsky's Third Symphony had eluded me before hearing Herbert von's magisterial account.

Bach's Twenty Four Preludes and Fugues: Angela Hewitt
      ....

I had heard the 'Ring' broadcasts from Bayreuth or Covent Garden over many years as a teenager, but really only listened to the purple passages. I hadn't made the effort to get hold of a libretto and listen with proper attention. Couldn't be doing with all that 'dialogue'!

The opening concert* of the Sydney Opera House on 29 September 1973 included orchestral extracts from the Ring (Siegfried's Journey to the Rhine etc) and Birgit Nilsson singing the immolation scene from Goetterdaemmerung, all under the baton of Mackerras. There was supposed to be a live relay on R3. But the link failed and they played Solti's recording with Nilsson instead. I listened intently and was hooked. I went out and bought the Solti Ring Box set as soon as I could afford to.

Richard Hickox's recording of the Dream of Gerontius. I had listened to the Boult recording but it did nothing for me (since revised!!). but I heard Hickox at college on the new fangled cd throug a good set of headphones and it blew me away!

        Never looked back...

Most interesting to read your conversion, Barbirollians. I wonder, therefore, what you'll make of the latest 'live' performance by Barbirolli with the Halle on the recent Barbirolli Society release?

If you have, then I probably mentioned Belohlavek's cycle of the Martinu Symphonies with the BBCSO - decades of listening to them without their "clicking" with me, and then these lithe, radiant, dancing performances completely captivated me.

(Strictly speaking, the broadcasts first, then the recordings.)

If the broadcasts were on Ao3 they probably were the recordings which were issued on CD.

Did you lose the 2nd disc of a two disc set?

I already didn't mind No 6 so it wasn't quite relevant to this thread

Oh... and not even Mravinsky can save the banal second half of No 5

IIRC, I first heard the Live evening broadcasts from the Barbican that were used in the CD release, but there was also (again IIRC) two sets of Ao3 broadcasts: a repeat of the Barbican concerts but also recordings from a tour of China, Japan and Indonesia.

I would have loved Belohlavek's final Prom season with the BBCSO to have included a further cycle of performances.

A rebroadcast of the 2009 Barbican concert performance of Juliette would be very welcome, especially now that we have the HD sound option via the iPlayer.

Just heard that work in concert 2 nights ago, led by Muti. Check out his recording with the Philharmonia.
