I don't know this group, but they sound superb, and the recording is of demonstration quality, made in Athens at the Dimitris Mitropoulos hall, Megaron. [ ... ]
To my shame, I was avoiding this release because of the CD cover! A quick listen on Qobuz streaming and I've hit the Download button (especially since it's available in 96/24 for only €12.23 at the moment). The Overture and Storm were enough to get me over my anti-cover feelings.

The Robin Milford and reconstructed Stanford Second Violin Concerto on EM Records. This is a real discovery . The slow movement of the Stanford - indeed the whole work is more imaginative and less derivative than most of the work of his I have heard and the concerto is really rather lovely as a whole .

The Milford is longer and more discursive but of real substance - almost like a big VW concerto but more wistful and resigned than VW works would tend to sound .

        Highly recommended .

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Yes Barbirollians,a lovely disc, with the icing on the cake Holst overture.
The slow movement of the Stanford is gorgeous isn't it,brings to mind Danny Boy somehow.
Jeremy Dibble has done a super job on the Stanford I think.

Do you know the Hyperion record of the first concerto and suite for violin and orchestra?a favourite of mine and equally recommendable IMO.

No - not familiar with those works - sound worthy of investigation.

I am very smitten with this Milford Concerto and the Stanford - it would be good to hear them at the Proms rather than say the Walton and Bruch 1 yet again .

Not even at the time of the Chandos recording?
