No Abbado in that list, Roehre, Alison?

I havent really been that impressed by Abbado as a Bruckner conductor.
True, I haven't heard the Lucerne Seventh and did not know of the existence of the Fourth.

Maybe I have a little too much Haitink in my list. But I don't half miss him when I listen
to other efforts and was delighted by Roehre's seal of approval.

I am pleased to also have Solti, Herbert von, Tennstedt and Klemperer in my stable.

            There's only 1 Bruckner 3 - Barbirolli.
            There's only 1 Bruckner 7 - Barbirolli.
            There's only 1 Bruckner 8 - Barbirolli.
            There's only 1 Bruckner 9 - Barbirolli.

            A truly great Brucknerian.

If Haitink would use the 3rd (1889) version in 3 (he is consequent in playing and recording the 2nd, 1877 version), then possibly I would have preferred Abbado. And for 6 I am doubting between Klemperer and Barenboim (the latter for its IMO magnificent slow movement, with one of the slowest, perhaps the slowest, funeral march in that mvt).

With reference to Abbado's Bruckner 4 with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra:

I got my copy from the RAH when Abbado and the Lucerne band played Mahler 3 at the Proms. This is a superb performance, highly recommended.

It's CD only, BBM, but don't let that put you off as it is a wonderful performance, fully worthy of the Lucerne/Abbado recordings.

That's ok then Petrushka. I just find that orchestra quite amazing, The Lucerne Festival Orchestra.

Mind you, it does appear to cost somewhat more than a DVD would.

It's interesting to me to see that no one here seconded Julian Johnson's choice of the Eighth performed by Marek Janowski and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande on the 26 Feb. Building a Library. Is this because this release is too recent, the choice too idiosyncratic, or because the other performances are simply superior?

And what about the 'new' kid on the block....?

No-one seems to have mentioned Marcus Bosch's almost complete traversal (only #1missing, to my reckoning) mainly on SACD with the Sinfonieorchester Aachen (HvK's old stamping ground).

They seem to be very much hidden gems! I have three shelves groaning with Bruckner alone (everyone from Abendroth through to Wand) but these performances are seriously challenging some of my sacred cows.

Sample his electrifying 2nd - splendidly caught in SACD sound in the Nikolauskirche's ample acoustic, though the sound is never muddied. The brass rasp and glint wonderfully, the strings surge magnificently and the whole performance has an inevitability and seems to banish the stop-go effect with which you're left after some performances. It develops organically and the playing is deeply affecting, profoundly felt and greatly assured with Bosch really earning his Brucknerian spurs.

Just a note - 7 and 8 are CD (not SACD, despite what Amazon will tell you) but include a DTS surround disc (DVD compatible, but no vision).

With that ringing endorsement - and the URL handily included - duly ordered from Amazon. Based on Karafan's assessment of the performance, I'm much looking forward to hearing it.
