Jonathan Dove World Premiere recordings CD

Just spotted this new Naxos disc of world premiere recordings of Jonathan Dove's song cycles, featuring some of my favourite young songsters soprano Claire Booth, tenor Nicky Spence and their pianist Andrew Matthews-Owen (all heard previously on a memorable Hoddinott CD) The Dove disc has the added bonus of one of my favourite singers, mezzo Patricia Bardon, heard here with piano, which is a first for her I think on record. Texts by Vikram Seth, Lorca, Shakespeare and the late tenor Sir Robert tear. 71mins.
All for £5.99! Available on pre-order now:

I enjoyed Dove's Adventures of Pinnocchio some years ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxKu6UEv1-0

His music seems generally to be easy enough to listen to, and also inventive. I thought it was worth sampling some of his songs before placing an order for the new CD. His three Tennyson Songs are examples - http://open.spotify.com/track/08CsVPOwFIRvhftYkn2Wew [Tracks 26-28]

I remember he wrote the music to a film called 'Prague' many years ago that was very good. Sounded like lots of harps. I've tried to trace the film but it's not been released on DVD or video.

The only piece of Dove I 'know' is Figures in the garden, one of the Glyndebourne wind serenades.
If that's anything to go by, this new CD may well be worth investigating!

Just listened to the spotify link-thanks Dave!
I've pre ordered the new Naxos disc. Great composer and some of my favourite sing performers too.
And Dove has a new proms commission being premiered this year too...

If his sing cycles are of this quality, they have been neglected too long. Well done Naxos for taking up the cause

Prestoclassical has put all the sample tracks on for this new CD. Sounds just great. Thought you'd all appreciate a preview before buying:

Having listened to this CD twice now - amazon were 2 days late delivering - I can recommend it without hesitation. Very engaging song cycles. FT gave it a 4star review, but it warrants 5 on the strength of the quality of the music itself and the first class performers, who clearly enjoy each bar. Hope others have enjoyed it too...

Been reading the Proms threads. Haven't been yet but, some of what I have heard has ben dismal on iplayer. The Mozart piano concerto in the Dove premiere concert was a real let down, the orchestra sounded as if they could not be bothered. Dove was good - prefer his works with voice tho, especially the choral.

I have enjoyed this CD enormously (3 hearings) and recommend it to all kindred spirits and lovers of song here. The music is beguiling and the performances first class.
