In the past, before I bought into the Squeezebox streaming system, I used Taiyo-Yuden discs and they seem to last well as if they are properly stored (see Gordon's post).
I used to buy 100 CD-R packs of printable Taiyo-Yuden from DVDShopOnline where they work out at around 20p per disc.
PC users will probably find EAC is the best option, and most reliable, and athough I have now switched almost entirely to Apple Macs, I have used that tool with good results in the past.
The two standard recommendations for accurate rips on Windows PCs are EAC and dbpoweramp. Many people these days prefer dbpoweramp, though EAC is free. I moved over to dbpoweramp a couple of years ago and find it quicker and somewhat more convenient.
