    Mahler 4 Barbirolli

Listening to the BBC legends Barbirolli on tour in Czechoslovakia with Heather Harper .

I defy anyone not to be greatly moved and I doubt I have ever heard the soprano solo in the finale better or more beautifully sung .

I have to agree, it is most beautifully sung, Harper was always a favourite of mine. I have a tape from the same year of her singing the Vier Letzte Lieder with Rudolf Kempe - exquisite!
The other soprano that I rank equally highly in Mahler 4 is Judith Raskin, with Szell and the Clevelanders.

Now all you need is the Barbirolli, du Pre, BBC SO performance of the Elgar Concerto (available on Testament) to complete the whole of that 3rd January, 1967 Prague concert. What a remarkable concert it must have been.

The Raskin/Szell recording was my introduction to the pier.. i am afraid that it has "imprinted" me for life. My next favorite 4th is Horenstein, who seems to find some darker under currents that elude Szell.

I've done that once or twice but what a difference in the sound between the two different transfers! You'd never think they came from the same concert.
