New Ida Haendel Supraphon boxed set !

Ida Haendel: Prague Recordings 1957-1965. Supraphon: SU41622. Buy 5 CDs online. Ida Haendel (violin) & Alfréd Holeček (piano) Prague Symphony Orchestra & Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Václav Smetáček & Karel Ančerl

Well not entirely new - the Beethoven and Sibelius were released a couple of years back , the Lalo is available in the Ancerl edition and most of the other concertos too.

New however are the three Beethoven sonatas and the Stravinsky concerto and some other shorter pieces and I cannot wait to hear her Kreutzer !

I'm curious. How did a British Violinist record so much for a Czech label? I can't think of another non Czech Artist that is so represented on Supraphon.

As to the Haendel recordings box. Were they recorded for commercial disc release, or in association with radio broadcasts? The answer is that both criteria apply.

I believe Haendel (who was born in Poland) also performed in China before that was common. Was she sympathetic to communism, I wonder?

Mackerras was a serious student of Czech music of course but I think a lot of his conducting there was after the Wall came down.

I think she might have been pals with Ancerl most of the recordings are with him - maybe pastoral guy will know he has one of the few copies of Woman with Violin still known to be extant !

                Signed by the lady herself...

I think Ms. Haendel simply went where the work was. There's no mention of Ancerl in the index (although many for Celibidache!)

I suspect that Supraphone have simply got hold of Czech Radio tapes which sound pretty good. (Her Beethoven/Sibelius disc is never out my CD player.). Hopefully, there are many more by both Czech Radio and others. The BBC must have piles of her playing although I suspect it will require her death before it's released.

I don't think she had any sympathy for communism. I suspect she's too fond of her fees!

Like most players trying to make a career and she just went where she was invited.

In fact, I've just remembered a lovely story I was told.

I had lessons with a violin teacher in Glasgow whose father was a player in the BBC Scottish Orchestra. As a ten year girl she was 'sitting in' on a live studio broadcast (with no audience) of the Brahms concerto and was about 10 feet away from the great lady. She got a nosebleed and was attended to by Ms. Haendel during the tuttis!

She got a great round of applause from the orchestra at the finish!

Alpine mentions a Franck Sonata from the great lady on his eponymous thread. Does anyone know where this is available?

                  Thanks.

There is this record but I have heard very mixed reports about these Doremi live recordings of Ida

                      Many thanks, Barbi.

I realised that I'd missed this one out since it contains Mozart's 4th violin concerto, a work I used to play for auditions and which I never, EVER want to hear again!

However, the samples of the Franck sounded very good although the sound quality sounds a little 'home made'. It's on my wish list now.

I have only just got round to ordering this and it arrived today . Like PG I have most of the concerto recordings in the box already but wondered what others thought of the performances of the chamber works ?

What do you think of the Stravinsky concerto performance, Bb?

As to the chamber performances, well, there's absolutely no doubt whose in charge!

Have not got round to the Stravinsky disc but the final record , the Lalo , Glazunov and Wieniawski No2 is superb and the sound seems brushed up particularly in the latter two . The Glazunov is particularly dazzling .

The Prague recordings can be streamed from Qobuz or Spotify. There are more than half a dozen albums on Napster, including the Glazunov - but that service doesn't seem to have the Prague box set yet. Other streaming services - e.g Apple Music and Deezer may also have some of these.

The solo playing is very good. Currently listening to Sarasate Gypsy Song. I do wonder though whether some of the things we like are due to the relatively close recording of the violin, which is a feature of many of these, and was perhaps much more likely in recordings from an earlier era.
