I'm a bit of a sucker for French orchestral songs (Berlioz, Duparc, Chausson) and for Ravel, so this is a real favourite.

As well as Ravel's overture with that name ?

Oh! Good question - I'd forgotten about that. I "remember" that I wasn't that impressed with it, but haven't heard it in years. Here I go a-youTubing!

The first record I was utterly disappointed with was Bruckner 5, conducted by Bruno Walter (!). I am ashamed to admit it , but even with Walter at the helm, I couldn't get on with it. I eventually became bored (about ⅔ of the way through the first movement). I have never managed to rectify that. I freely admit that that is undoubtedly my loss, but that really was my first serious disappointment.

Blimey - if it really is Ormandy - I have that!

But I am not enough of a Brucknerphile to know exactly what I should be looking for, although on great advice from Highlanddougie, I have become well-acquainted with Wand; they really are something, and have given me a real sense of focus in Bruckner - I refer to his BPO recordings...

Prompted by another current thread, the firstCDs I didn't like we're Bernstein's Franck D minor Symphony & Karajan's Eine Alpensinfonie, both on account of their poor sound.

A fair point... but was it Bernstein's Sony or DG?

Well, there you are! I no longer have the LP but it was the 4th, not the 5th (the Romantic one); definitely Walter. Just shows what an impression it made all those years ago.
