Reviews have been mixed and some very positive. I enjoyed the concerto more than the symphony but if you have and love the Ida Haendel you're likely to find Tazza a shade one dimensional I think.

Ida Haendel she ain't - and I don't think she ever will be.

But she is not alone among the present generation of violin soloists in that respect and I have heard her play some concerti very well.

My favourite recording of Nº 2 is the one that I was playing in - but to return to Nº 1:

For me, it defines the true William Walton and not the one written at the behest of his publishers and bank manager.

My favourite recording of the first two (of the three) movements is Mackerras':

... and at £1.27 including P&P for a "very good" second-hand copy, it's a real bargain (superb First Symphony, too).

          Szell is splendid, too:

Less succesful at presenting the glow of the Music in the first two Movements, but (IMO) better at integrating the Finale into the whole scheme of things is Brabbins on a BBCMusMag (I don't know his Hyperion version) - but I'm happier being discontented with the last Movement in exchange for Mackerras' superb performance of the first two movements. This really does make clear that there is some of Walton's very best Music in this work - and my "second-best" (as children in Spennymoor used to say) recording of the First, too.

Yes that is how I found her admirable earlier recording when played on Essential Classics after it won BAL - an off day for Piers Burton Page whose comments on the KWC recording were very odd .

Previn had a flair for Walton's music that was evident also in his recording of the violin concerto with Kyung-wha Chung

Exactly and indeed Walton when asked what he wanted for his 75th birthday concert asked for her to play the concerto

Kyung-wha Chung is one of the precious few violinists who don't sound "a shade one dimensional" when compared with Dame Ida.

When the second symphony was premiered by the Liverpool PO and John Pritchard in September 1960, I was a very junior technical operator in Broadcasting House, and was sent to a small studio near Warren Street Station to record the concert from its live broadcast down the line from Liverpool This was the first time that I had been alone in a recording channel facing a BTR2 tape machine with that responsibility. and I was very nervous as I pressed the record button. All these years later, I wonder if that tape still exists in the archive somewhere.

I've just sampled the Gardner No. 1, and I find it a great disappointment. There just isn't any sense of power or menace, nothing snarls. Just listen to Previn, or Mackerras, or even Paul Daniel on Naxos. They all have the measure of the music and capacity to thrill. The Chandos recording is OK, rather too distant for my taste.
Much the same goes for Tasmin Little's performance of the Violin Concerto, it's not nearly as committed as Chung. One of my favourites, in spite of
the relatively poor sound, is Francescatti and the Philadelphia with Ormandy, Joshua Bell is good too.

I'm afraid the Gardner CD will be on its way to Oxfam shortly.

I'm trying to remember if I was there, as I went to most of the Liverpool Phil's concerts at that time as a student. However, in the case of the Gardner disc , I'm with you all the way, although I don't have an Oxfam here on the Costa Blanca!

                        - that is from a very good series of recordings of (most of) Walton's orchestral works.

I, too, would love to hear a recording of the premiere; in spite of your (understandable) nrevousness, do you remember anything about the performance, Ferretf?

In Susana Walton's memoir as I recall it Walton was unhappy with the premiere performance and then thrilled to bits by Szell's recording.

Then why is it getting all this attention? Both the concerto and symphony? I doubt whether it's because of one sided playing or single dimensional?

It would be nice to say that I enjoyed every moment, I was probably too busy planning the tape changeovers, but I do remember realising that it was very different in character to No. 1. I was only in my early twenties at the time.

The Szell version is wonderful, coupled with the neglected Hindemith Variations. We should hear those more often
