Szell is splendid, too:
Less succesful at presenting the glow of the Music in the first two Movements, but (IMO) better at integrating the Finale into the whole scheme of things is Brabbins on a BBCMusMag (I don't know his Hyperion version) - but I'm happier being discontented with the last Movement in exchange for Mackerras' superb performance of the first two movements. This really does make clear that there is some of Walton's very best Music in this work - and my "second-best" (as children in Spennymoor used to say) recording of the First, too.

I did not say that Walton Nº 2 "does not rate" - it is a fine piece of writing, but it does not have the autobiographical impact of Nº 1.
Regarding the violin concerto, I am told that Nigel Kennedy gave a good account of that with the Bournemouth players (I was not taking part, AMS, so don't bother to comment)
So I wonder if there is a recording of Joshua Bell, a player who I much admire, performing the work. I imagine that he is of a similar temperament to Nige and the concerto might suit him.Last edited by Hornspieler; 03-07-14, 10:55.

In its original pairing it was with a lovely performance of the Barber concerto

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
