I was inspired to dig out the EMI double Forte set . Not going particularly cheaply on Amazon but well worth getting

Symphony No1 in Haitink's really interesting and different account NO2 in Previn's excellent 1974 recording which has some of the snap of his legendary recording of No1 .

Tortelier in the Cello Concerto - an intensely lyrical very beautiful reading and the sensational unmatched Ida Haendel recording of the Violin Concerto .

On relistening to the Gardner performance of the Symphony (1st, 2nd & 4th mvts), I found the taut rhythmic approach rather too motoric, mechanical - closer to the scherzo of DSCH 10 than the more emotional mix of nervy anxiety and exhilaration I hear in this piece. Maybe it was my mood. But having heard other performances which aren't taut enough, it made me realise that tight precision may not be everything in this music...

Cali- do you have the Haitink ? Not taut in that context but speaks a good deal to me. Is Gardner trying to out previn Previn ?

Yes I've had the Haitink since it came out (i.e. on various successive media) - it speaks a good deal to me, too: lacking the fleetness but making up for it in a sort of titanic, gritty (dare one say it? Brucknerian) way... and TERRIFIC playing and recording

I had the Haitink on LP but just realised that I've never bought the CD. Just ordered the Double Forte disc used for £6.97 + £1.26 p+p. Only one left in stock and I've got it!

Well done Pet, it's a great little package of works and performances as others have said.

Let us know when you've listened to the Symphony. I liked Cali's description of the performance and as a dyed in the wool Brucknerian you'll surely find much to enjoy!
