Walton 1 is a firm favourite in Casa Pulcinella: I found 10 recordings on my shelves (and two BBC Music Magazine ones too)! I can't really justify buying any more, though the Brabbins looked interesting at the time, as does the Gardner now.

I listened to the Colin Davis LSO Live recording last night, and found myself less impressed than I had been when I first heard it in the car on CD Review; perhaps it just needed the volume cranking up a bit.

Must listen to the Mackerras version again, following comments above.

Walton: Symphony No. 1 / Violin Concerto

I know a lot of people here don't do 'popular' but I was just wondering why this is at the top of the classical charts this week.

      Any particular merits / attractions?

Because it is a very good recording, imo. Tasmin Little is a very fine musician.

It's had a fair bit of promotion on Radio 3, including two complete broadcasts of that recording of the Symphony.

As also is the viola concerto, but for me, the cello concerto falls short of the other two.

                  prefer the Viola 'un though.

True, but this work can be pulled off rather nicely, if the right people performing it

Is this as good as the Radio 3 puffery of the recording suggests ?

I am a Previn addict in this work though I do like the Rattle too .

As for the violin concerto - I have Ida H ,KWC , Nige and Heifetz - do I really need Tazza?

This earlier thread covers the subject too... my view is in post 12 as regards the Symphony

I don't enjoy Tazza's playing so gave the concerto a miss...
