Belcea cycle last month. Almost certainly not going to be the last ever, I'm already starting to look at piano sonatas

Had to think long and hard about this like others. Beethoven formed the cornerstone of my early collecting, and is still the composer of whom I have most recordings (though others, notably Bartok; Brahms and Haydn have caught up). I'm not one for owning multiple recordings of works, preferring to explore the repertory, so having practically the complete Beethoven opus from years back, I have necessarily not bought many recordings lately. However, the string trios as performed by the stellar trio of Perlman, Zukerman and Harrell (sadly not Jacqui ) stands out. The extra frisson of a live performance lends additional enchantment to these marvellous, life enhancing works. To my mind these are more impressive, fully realised works than the Op.18 string qts. If you don't know them try the irresistible Presto from Op.9 No.1 for starters.

Other than that: the Zehetmair/Bruggen recording of the VC. This has not supplanted my first recording of this work (Menuhin, VPO, Silvestri) in my affections. In a du Pre box set, her recordings of the Piano Trios with Zukerman and Barenboim; and the cello sonatas with hubby. Brilliant, swashbuckling performances of both sets.

I think it was the Sony Tokyo Quartet box:



Difficult to keep track. I have the Decca Curzon boxes (the 4 volumes, not the single box) on order. They have several Beethoven works in them, but they have not arrived yet.

I like the Tokyo's Beethoven set but some regard it as relatively light-weight. I think it's a lively alternative and beautifully played

Any reason why you chose to go the 4 boxes-route for Curzon Bryn?

It worked out just that little bit cheaper (Used - Very Good), and I had ordered Volune 2 before I noticed the all-in-one box (also Used - Very Good).

The most recent Sonata disc by Angela Hewitt Op. 31/3' 22, and 101. A bit of a dissapoint net compared to the rest of the releases in her cycle.
