    Recordings of Shostakovich's Violin Concertos 1 & 2

I am looking for an alternative version of Shostakovich's Violin Concertos 1 & 2. I already have the version from Maxim Vengerov with Rostropovich on Apex/Teldec. Does anyone have any views on the accounts from soloists Arabella Steinbacher under conductor Andris Nelsons on Orfeo or soloist Sergey Khachatryan under conductor Kurt Masur on Naïve?

I do not have those recordings, but David Oistrakh in No 1 and possibly No 2 is pretty much the benchmark as far as I understand. His are the only recordings I have (I think!)

      See the following thread: http://www.for3.org/forums/showthrea...ded-recordings

I've always liked Lydia Mordkovitch on Chandos with the RSNO and Neeme Järvi, but I also have Sergey Khachatryan's performances and would recommend the Naïve disc. Khachatryan is superb in Shostakovich as he demonstrated when he appeared, aged 19, at the 2005 Proms.

I'd agree with Cellini, David Oistrakh is indispensable in these concertos. Which version gets a bit complicated, because he made more than one recording, and seems to have licenced them to more than one company: at any rate, I have several LPs that appear to duplicate his performances.

No. 1 op. 99 with the Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra of New York conducted by Dimitri Mitropoulos. Issued on American Columbia and English Philips. Powerful stuff, but only in mono.

No. 1 op. 99 with the New Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Maxim Shostakovich. Originally issued by HMV in 1973, reissued in 1981.

No. 2 op. 129 with the Moscow Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra conducted by Kiril Kondrashin. Issued in at least two different Melodiya sleeves in Russia, and in the UK by HMV under their licencing arrangement with Melodiya.

That's just on LP, they must have been reissued on CD as well.

I also have a version of no. 1 by Leonid Kogan, with the Moscow Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Kondrashin. This was also originally issued by Melodiya in Russia, and in the UK by HMV. The recording appears to date from 1962, the sleeve note from 1970. Dont know if its on CD. Kogan has a legendary reputation, the Russians didnt let him out as much as they did Oistrakh and his profile in the west was consequently lower, but he made several recordings for English Columbia. The original LPs now sell for absolutely stonking sums, especially his stereos. One (I think it was the Brahms concerto) went on ebay recently for over four thousand quid. But aside from his rarity value, I believe he actually was a very fine violinist. Cellini, any views on Kogan?

Yes, he was very fine, and I think Kogan was a pupil of Oistrakh?

I must try and get to hear his version.

Just to add an edit: I really admire most of the Russian players, certainly those that were around pre 1980.
