It's nothing, Mike. I have Asperger's Syndrome (confirmed only some 5 years ago, but it explains so much) and one of the symptoms is confusion when people say one thing yet mean another. There have been plenty of times in my life, right from childhood, when I've been left puzzled and embarrassed because I've failed to pick up the cues.

I have been known to make little witticisms, sometimes involving irony and not only on these boards. I used to work with a company based in Cambridge Mass and would do that there, always with straight face. There would be a pause and then one of my American colleagues would carefully check: "British joke, right?"

The Martinu disc referred to in message 8 has just arrived, and is being played as I type.

Memory must be playing tricks again, as these seem new to me: perhaps I didn't have them on LP after all!
No matter: I'm pleased to have them now!!

It is a great disc. It is also my favorite Martinu, and I'm sure in no small part due to the advocacy of Suk. Those works deserve to be better known.
