I recall another Sargent story and I am wondering if it was apocryphal. It seems that in the early days of WW II both Sargent and von Karajan
were Conducting in neutral Switzerland. They were competing for a job and Sargent got the nod. Furious, von K was reported to have told him "When the Fuehrer wins the war, I will have you shot!"

I didn't sing or play under Sir Malcolm Sargent, nor did I see him 'live' but I have watched this film of his conducting BBCSOwith Piatigorsky playing Walton Cello concerto

Sounds like a very mixed bag judging by the review in IRR

I saw him quite often at the Proms, but I don't have very clear memories of his performances. I still admire his EMI recordings of Holst, particularly the Planets, Beni Mora and The Perfect Fool, but I think some of his best recordings are as a concerto conductor with the likes of Schnabel, Heifetz, Sammons, Moiseiwitsch and others.
There is an excellent Shostakovich 9 on Everest with the LSOs, coupled with Boult's superb Shostakovich 6, worth seeking out.

Didn't he only conduct Yeomen for DECCA (the others recorded by Isadore Godfrey?)

#1 Barbirollians, could you post details of the box, eg code number? I think I might buy it.

Also Princess Ida. The rest (apart from Utopia Limited and The Grand Duke [Royston Nash]) were indeed Isodore Godfrey.

These alternative kinds of bracket are coming in handy.

I did buy that EMI Walton box recently and was impressed with his First Symphony - very different to Previn but real concentration and grip .

I wonder why this Box has come out now? I think it is 47 years since his death. I have most of them but atm unable to hear any music, even with hearing aids.

He gave some wonderful performances but was variable, perhaps. He was underrated because he liked a life outside music too, but it was interesting to attend his rehearsals and I learned a lot of music that way.

Well these Icon boxes have rehabilitated a lot of long deleted recordings and Sir Malcolm made a great deal of recordings for EMI so no doubt they decided it was well worth a punt . 18 CDs though and it could be that they should have been more discriminating .

Fingers crossed they can sort out your hearing aids so you can listen to music again saly .

Eighteen CDs for just over forty quid is a bargain, I shall definitely have to buy it!
