    Toscanini ICON box

His BBC SO recordings from the 1930s . They are astonishingly good for their time and those made live in the Queens Hall in 1935 in particular have an extraordinary frisson.

After their appearance on an HMV Treasury LP I have long since loved the Enigma and La Mer . The Enigma is simply marvellous and how wonderful to hear a flowing yet moving Nimrod. The La Mer has a sense of swell that very few have matched . As for the Sibelius 2 ears stand on end .

No wonder judging from these recordings that many wanted simply to rebuild the Queen's Hall on the spot after it was burned down. There is a warmth yet clarity that is striking.

6CDs for about £11 on amazon - buy buy buy

I've been holding back because I fancy getting the Toscanini behemoth box which I have assumed will contain these recordings too.

But thanks for the prompt, Barbs

ams I'm not sure the BBCSO recordings are in the big Toscanini box as that will presumably be the RCA recordings. I would like the live Philharmonia Brahms Symphonies which should have gone in the icon box but are only available at around £30 on Testament.

For £10.29 it is worth duplicating if you have to wait for ages for the RCA !

The reason for not rebuilding it (in 1954) was that London already had enough large concert halls.

                  Later they built the Barbican.

Comparing the contents of my 'Complete RCA Collection' with the listings on the back of the ICON box shown on Amazon, I think you will find that there are just two discs in common - Beethoven 1,4 & 6 plus a few overtures (Mozart, Brahms Rossini) and Weber's Invitation to the Dance. The Presto listing confirms this right near the end - "Includes 2 CDs of newly released recordings, originally made for HMV with the BBC Symphony Orchestra".

Pristine Classics have them on CD and also as downloads in various formats with prices that vary too - the 2CD set for 32.40Euro. On the whole these transfers are quite good.

Superb award-winning historic classical, jazz and blues recordings restored and remastered to the highest standards. CDs, HD downloads and streaming services.

Still dazzled by the delivery of the 84CD Toscanini- The Complete RCA Collection + DVD, The Maestro, a film by Peter Rosen -, this morning.

A compact one box set - same virtues of the Colin Davis Collection in that the titles of each disc is clearly printed on the spine as they are packed cheek-by-jowl as if in a shoe box and can be firmly based. The 176 page booklet is sensibly contained between hard covers for regular usage.

Only one heart-stopping moment as my first check fell short of 84 CDs until I realised that some of the card containers contained up to three separate discs within their covers.

Price? I checked around and the highest offer was £156 but quickly settled for a £94.57p deal with the river people. Sometimes they opt for a speedy substantial price hike - be warned!

My first selection must be the Toscanini 1947 recording of "Otello", Vol 58, Studio
8-H, NY City, with Ramon Vinay in the title role. 2CDs.
