If you live way, way out in the country, the Amazon type sites are a godsend.
Yes, I'd love to browse and pick up unconsidered stuff, but 'fraid many of us out here don't have the luxury.
Barely a mention of that on the BAL chat.

Shops were mentioned in England and Scotland. I live in a country i.e. Northern Ireland where there are no specialist shops with a decent selection of classical music. I don't even bother with HMV in Belfast, which used to have a self-contained classical department but now has very little of interest. The joy of browsing, or of walking into a shop and being tempted to buy whatever was being played, is a nostalgic memory.

Sorry TS - I see that you have already raised that question. Is the ball in Pabs' court now?

#17 Petrushka, I dont know whereabouts in Staffordshire you are, but as an alternative to Brum, have you tried Yarborough House in Bishops Castle, which advertises in 'Gramophone' as having a large stock of secondhand CDs and vinyl (and no doubt will order up anything currently in the catalogue that they dont have in stock)? I havent been there myself, but it sounds well worth a visit. Address is The Square, Bishops Castle, Shropshire SY9 5BN, tel. 01588 638318; open 10.00 - 5.00, closed Monday and Wednesday. I used to go annually as part of my holiday in that neck of the woods and it is a veritable cave of delight for CD/LP lovers

                    Hi Ferret

No comment! But I seem to have missed you at Les Aldrichs today. I was there early, 9.15am and they had some very nice Jazz on a Thorens turntable which sounded excellent. I had a CD for you but some other time.

P S Does anyone know how to turn off this dreadful type correction as it changes a hell of a lot of what I'm trying to say. It's driving me into the loony bin.

Nostalgia corner. GHT Sparks was our local record shop in Coulsdon. I've just been reading about the 50th anniversary of The Rolling Stones first album which came out in April 1964. My first ever LP purchase took place there (paper round income put to good use). Great album and I've still got it - dog-eared almost unplayable but still there as a memento.

I wish I could have got there today, but I couldn't make it although it's quite near me. Since the new team with Edward have taken over, things are looking good there.
I usually pop in when I do my weekly shop on wednesdays round about one o'clock usually, after the obllgatory visits to Sainsbury's and M & S, I'll look out for you!

                          Bws.

PS Les Aldrich have their website up and running, just Google.

I used to live half a mile 'down the hill' from Les Aldrich ( in HORNsey ) before moving to S-E Kent 10 years ago.
What happened to the genial and knowledgeable Simon?

Until recently Simon still owned the business, but he and his family moved to the North of England, and he returned from time to time before the business was taken over by a long standing customer, a benefactor who stipulated nothing should be changed. There have been some changes, but nothing has altered the character of the shop or the helpfulness of the staff.

There's a quite good classical shop here but the average cost of a CD seems to be about $35. As a result browsing rarely results in a purchase when it's often significantly cheaper to order online and then wait four weeks or so for delivery; or order online, deliver to America and have family members pick them up there on business trips. (Of course it's not as though music was ever cheap in NZ, with all those oceans to cross.)

It's quite un-romantic but in the choice between buying CDs and food I usually have to pick the latter
