Did they say on CD Review that sales of classical LPs were rocketing? If so, shall we have the Specialist Classical LP Charts?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
As I recall, he said sales of classical music on LP were increasing, but when asked what the total proportion of classical sales they represented, said "0.1%", so the rocket has a long way to climb!
I dont think we'll need a Specialist Classical LP Chart, because I cant believe anyone would release anything on LP, but not on CD as well.
Perhaps your definition of what is acceptable is not the same as mine. I never did end up with a vinyl set of that release that I considered anywhere near perfect.
Bert
You haven't been paying attention BC: Glacial disdain is my prerogative, not yours.
I never settled for acceptable. I expected, paid for, and obtained impeccable surfaces. There were a few exceptions, but reputable shops exchanged without quibble, especially when I made a D***** nuisance of myself (my default position). I hope you are not judging the entire industry by one set. You should have returned it time and time again until you obtained a copy that met your requirements.
On further reflection, I'm not sure, having assured myself that I have a record in best condition, the sound quality has ever been my first requirement, over the performance, which is why I listen with pleasure to mono LPs or transcriptions of 78s: if I'm concentrating on the performance, I do not notice the sound.

You still need the big orange box - trust me - it's - I was going to say Nipper's what's its - but that's the wrong label. Actually, thinking about it Warner could do a very good Mono EMI box.

That thought (an EMI mono box) has crossed my mind. I think it, like the Decca box, would be more for convenience than anything: I played one of my Ansermet Petrushkas (ACL- I will try an LXT later) and it is in fine condition. I'm not sure what Caliban has against that performance: any shortcomings in orchestral suavity are outweighed for me by Ansermet's understanding of the music. I've seen the ballet so many times I see it every time I listen (and always Gerd Larsen as first wetnurse!)
I'm surprised collections were disposed of in favour of CDs. There are so many of my favoured performances that have never been reissued on CD even now.

I was very guilty of that and I now see Lps I owned going for large sums on eBay!
I had exactly that same experience with the Gotterdammerung BC, straight from the box as new - I too sent the boxes back to Decca and each of several replacements had exactly the same problems even to having clicks in the same places although one could see no blemish. The last side had severe wow [which ruined those final chords] and so was a basic pressing problem that would have affected a whole batch pressed from the same pair of mis-aligned stampers and so no end of replacements would solve that other than a proper pressing set up. Either that or reaming the hole out and a lot of faffing to centre that last side by trial and error.
I also had several versions of the Dvorak 8 of LSO/Kertesz that were badly dished and would not play. Again several copies were replaced directly by Decca all with the same probelm. Dishing is caused by taking the disc out of the press too soon.
Yes! We went to our local classical CD store Macalister Mathieson Music in Spittal Street here in Edinburgh. We bought 2 CDs. Hans Werner Henze's second violin concerto which I listened to last night and a new cd of Violin concertos by Dvorak, Janacek and Suk. Joseph Spacek, with the Czech Philharmonic under Jiri Whitehead on the Supraphone label. (We're going to hear them in the Usher Hall in slightly more than two hours time).
We were given coffee and cakes along with our purchases as well as some interesting chat about who may be signing during the next Edinburgh Festival. A very positive experience!
Sounds excellent, pg - I didn't know of MMM; somewhere to bear in mind when I next visit Edinburgh. (Nobody's yet developed the technology for downloading coffee and cakes!)

Yes, I made a point of going to my local store, Audio Destination in Tiverton, and ordering a couple of CDs. They are primarily a hi-fi store, but I regularly use them to buy CDs. They confirmed they knew it was Record Store Day, but said not much was being made of it in the UK, though apparently its a big event in France and elsewhere.

Kertesz Dvorak 6 suffered from a pressing fault which was never satisfactorily remedied. Katchen/Gamba Emperor jumped just on the bridge to the finale.
No as I wasn't in the big city (Truro) but Mrs C caught me buying on line!
cloughie: you convey the impression that there actually is a record store in Truro! Am I missing something, other than charity shops and the mildly interesting place (Music Nostalgia?) in the corner of the pannier market??
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

LMP, Music Nostalgia is the one - not badly stocked - I've picked up the odd gem there but prices a little high cf the net. Don't know if they celebrated it this year but last year Seth Lakeman was there for Record Store Day.
