I had formerly owned the Hammerklavier and some of the Alkan, but I thought the lps were EMI, not RCA...

I have just got this and have not listened to any of it yet ? Any recommendations where to start - after his mesmerising Op 111 on BBC Legends I am tempted to start with the Hammerklavier .

I have had this for some time now, courtesy of Amazon Italia, and it is excellent. I think that the "Hammerklavier" is the place to start.

Phew! Has anyone listened to these discs yet? I just played the Alkan Concerto for Solo Piano disc and I'm still trying to get my breath back. I knew Alkan wrote some virtuoso stuff, but I never heard anything like this disc. I'd swear there were two people on that piano, but apparently it was John Ogdon, all on his own. Try the last part of the last movement, it is just not possible that any human hands can play like that.

Alkan. Just amazing playing. In a sense, one gets used to astonishing piano playing on record, especially if like me, you cant play a note on the piano. But among the astonishing players, Ogdon stands out as ... unbelievable. His playing seems to say, "Huh, you think that's difficult, wait till you hear THIS!"
