Me, I gave up on 'Breakfast' (the show) ages ago.
If I were in search of a mortifying penance for Lent I might consider forcing myself to listen to 'Breakfast' and forcing myself to be 'entertained' by the stale repertoire and - worse still - friendly (ugh!) manner and audience participation.

As it is, I have taken on the lighter penance - no alcohol, no cheese, no nuts...

        I'm giving up CD purchases.

And attempting to read Dante's Paradise.

... is it "attempting to read Dante" that is your Lenten task - or is it "giving up reading Dante"?

A friend of mine gives up chocolate, sweets, cakes and biscuits. This is really hard for her but she always says she feels a better person when she then pigs-out on Easter Eggs.

I think the hardest Penance for any of us to do would be - give up the Internet!

The Archbishop of Westminster, Vincent Nichols, said Catholics should give up meat on Fridays and match self-denial with increased giving to the poor. However, he did not say what vegetarian Catholics should give up!

According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

Even better would be if vegetarian Catholics gave up cannibalism and stopped eating Swedes!!

Boom, Boom! It's the way I tell 'em

Oh dear, I'll get me coat.

Yes, the Lenten task is to read all the way through the 3rd part of the Commedia. The other two parts were successfully completed during previous Lents; I have attempted the far drier third part before and have given up.

Absolutely not! I expect delivery of said purchase tomorrow, so I hope I am off the hook on a technicality.

In fact my Lenten "task" could be to listen to all of it.

Chocolate. The Creme Eggs have gone, the last few Roses are waiting for tomorrow and the Waitrose mints are about to be hidden away. Even the last chocolate muffin's been eaten. Don't think I'd have the energy to tackle Dante!

So am I! I'm starting 3 weekly Lent study groups and a series of Lent sermons. All on God's call. Anyone interested?

On the other hand I'm giving up ..... can't say. In the Sermon on the mount we are told 'let your fasting be in secret'. So all previous posters should have kept their posts to themselves.

                              But I forgive you!

                              Enjoy your pancakes.
