I don't think this Saturday's presenter likes Bruckner

Weird. As I was about half way through reading it, I thought: "I wonder if it will mention that he is the guest on Saturday Classics on Radio 3."

I know, I know, I know - call me cynical
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Some of the performers were new to Bruckner altogether.
        Really?

Why do the R3 decision makers think that anybody and everybody can present music shows? R4 perhaps should use Rob Cowan and Andrew McGregor as Financial experts!

I listened to a little of Mr Day's programme yesterday - he seemed to give a little dig at Radio 3 - words to the effect 'I would have liked to have played just Scarlatti sonatas but the producer wouldn't let me - this is the sort of thing R3 used to do' - he then gave chapter and verse of when R3 did play the complete Scarlatti sonatas in a long running series.

Mind you I'm sure they would have let him play complete works, which he chose not to do
BBC business correspondent Peter Day presents his favourite classical and folk music.

If I'm not mistaken the next two weeks are repeats of Evelyn Glennie's programmes

What, no Total Immersion? They could have devoted one to the sonatas alone.

The idea that some of the Concertgebouw's players were not familiar with Bruckner at all is so idiotic that I expect Peter Day to be offered a permanent job on Radio 3 very soon.

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                  Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Can it get any worse? I think it just did. Turned on to hear some saccharine pop song, which faded without pause into Holst's Neptune. Apparently it's being presented by some DJ from R6 who's presenting the programme as a "guest". All I can say is that I wish her a safe trip back to R6.

There's a coincidence. I'd just read on the R3 Facebook:

"Mary Anne Hobbs of BBC6Music is the guest presenter today.

It all came about when Radio3 producers in Salford kept hearing classical music coming from the 6Music studio. It turned out Mary Anne was playing Rachmaninov and Strauss on her 6Music Breakfast show - and the listeners were loving it.

So, to cut a long story short, we asked Mary Anne to come up with a sequence that includes some of her favourite contemporary music and plays it alongside classical music. I think you’ll find it a revealing, intelligent and pleasing mix. "

I queried the phrase "kept hearing" and then went on to check the MAH playlists back until the beginning of the year. No Rachmaninov, but there was a recording of Frühling. In fact in January there was also Tchaikovsky The Seasons for Piano [sic] and Vivaldi Concerto for 4 violins RV 580. In March there was an extract from Noye's Fludd.

Other than that, in 7 and a half months, the only other classical music I found was an Elvis Costello piece and a piece by Jonny Greenwood. Oh, and some David Bowie. I concluded that the producer's claim that they 'kept hearing' Rachmaninov and Strauss was delusional.

R3's barrel-scraping is becoming increasingly excruciating. As a host I must set a good example by not attacking R3's management team. But when they carry on heading relentlessly into a brick wall, they demean themselves.

Presumably now that 6 Music has overtaken Radio 3 (until next quarter) they're trying to lure some of 6 Music's audience over this side, just as they try to lure the CFM listeners over.

Why can't Radio 3 just be itself instead of (unsuccessfully) trying to copy other stations and their ideas?

I guess the question arises as to whether a Radio 6 producer would know a "real" piece of Rachmaninov or Strauss (as opposed to something which vaguely sounded like film music or a waltz) if it came up and bit him or her on the derriere.

I do hope that this isn't the prelude to some cost-cutting attempt to merge R3 and R6 into one station. That would be really awful.

the more down to earth call it bull sh@t - but marketing androids know that accuracy is totally unnecessary, just give the right impression and the punters will have forgotten in 10 mins what was said. The R3 brickwall destination foreseen by EA is I think a delusion - just a cess pit awaits but I'm sure the marketing dept will claim nothing smells as sweet.

They already attempt to do this by persuading presenters to address the pet listeners using twee voices.
