The double-s for ß rule is called the ''Geßlerhut'' or the ''silicon bosom'' of the reform, as it only serves the purpose to show that the text is ''reformed'', i.e. the autor of the text complies to the authorities, which is of course still very important in Germany. We've obviously not learnt very much after WWII. This rule makes German texts ugly and difficult do read, as the ß in classical German orthography has dedicated functions, see Das Zeichen ß.

It really does demonstrate La Derham's innate lack of sympathy for classical music if she has reached her age without ever hearing the correct pronunciation of Till Eulenspiegel. After all, it's hardly an oeuvre oubliee. Same goes for all those new school of presenters who insist on "Show Pan".
