Saly - I have original piano scores for the "Shepherd's Fenel Dance" and an arrangement of "Good King Wenceslas" by Balfour Gardner: both dated 1908 and in dark blue covers with Art Nouveau designs on the fronts. Very Percy Graingerish in the harmonies. My mum must have played them.

And what fascinating progammes we are having this week in the afternoons!
I think British music month has really caught fire this week, and it's almost over.

Oh dear! I'm afraid you've missed my reference to the fact that Henry Balfour Gardiner was the great-uncle of John Elliott Gardiner. You may be right about David Parry.

He has another claim to musical fame. He was the person who funded and organised the semi-private first performance of The Planets in 1918, at the Queen's Hall, conducted by Boult.

Didn't know that- he must have been well off as even in 1918 it would have cost a considerable sum. He didn't rely on his compositions then, what was his main activity?

I'm afraid I don't know, but he must have been very comfortable. He also bought Delius's home at Grez-sur-Loing in 1928 so that the composer could continue to live there.

I unexpectedly caught the last half of this programme (although not in such romantic and serendipitous circumstances as Caliban!) I really, really, enjoyed the Walton Henry V - which I confess I didn't know at all, and the Balfour Gardner seemed ideal for such a perfect Summer's day.
I see it was first broadcast last year and the thought crossed my mind that it would have been a better programme to broadcast in place of Simon Heffer's Saturday Classics on British music.

Walton came very close to Elgar [imho] in writing some wonderful marches and also music for film.

I think the Henry V music is played complete in the Olivier film - another old Video I must watch again.

Crown Imperial, Orb and Sceptre, Jo'burg Festival Overture, all wear very well.

Oh dear, red face aglow here. I quite missed the reference, but my excuse can be that the spelling distracted my comprehension - I am sure he spells his name 'Eliot'. That might have alerted me better!

I suppose it is surprising that (as far as I know) he has not conducted (or at least recorded) music by his distinguished relative. Or has he? Anybody know?

I see the RT has Balfour down as Gardiner - surely they are both GARDNERS? And sorry,Idon't know if JEG has recorded BG but somehow don't think so.

                          No - both Gardiners, saly

Anyway, I've found my recording of Shepherd Fennel's Dance, Sargent and the liverpool Phil.
A Dutton transfer with a very nice selection of English music bits and bobs, Webster Booth singing'Onaway Awake Beloved from Hiawatha, etc etc

My message 24 re the BALFOUR GARDINER piece and a CD of British music got somewhat mangled and some of it appeared in the middle of Cali's earlier post.

Perhaps Rumpole can kindly sort it when he appears. Many thanks.
