But was his CBSO recorded catalogue all that special, really, C? "Good" rather than outstanding, I would say.... CBSO concertgoers may have another view....

I felt Stockholm was always a better match, with a wonderful Nielsen cycle and adventurous repertoire like Anders Hillborg...similarly with his BBCSO concerts in The Proms, Scandinavian and New Music........

I've just listened to this - a very fine performance - spacious, majestic, 'noble' but never lacking in forward momentum or sense of structure. I thought the quieter passages sounded particularly beautiful. A Swedish orchestra, a Finnish conductor, a German venue - proof (it were needed) that Elgar travels well!

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
