Not a nickname precisely but I do think there are gains to be made with a new numbering system for symphonies, concertos and other badly-designed works consisting of more than one movement, which therefore currently present a problem to programme compilers.
I propose that, for example, the opening mov't of Beethoven's 5th (all anyone needs to hear really) should be called Beethoven Symphony '5 and one fourth'. The Allegretto of the 7th becomes '7 and two fourths' (which should really be cancelled to one-half to avoid an arithmetical solicism). The Pastoral will of course need to be in fifths.
I can see that there's a risk of confusion when we get to Haydn's quartet Op76/2 which despite being in 4 mov'ts is very inconsiderately subtitled 'Fifths'. This must to cease immediately. (Though I guess the risk of this totally unmemorable work figuring on Breakfast is actually pretty small)
This will also give great savings in space for printed and online listings (while there are still oldies around who feel the need to know what they're listening to, and even - I hear - even planning their listening in advance (who are these people anyway??)). 'Beethoven Symph 3.75' surely gives them all they need to know.I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!
