Is this perhaps a record for the quickest degeneration of a (non-Thatcher) thread?

Yes it is sad that even Breakfast that has generated lots and lots of orderly debate has also now descended to this - SMP does not IMHO deserve it......

I quite agree, AG. What she deserves is very early retirement.

That the opinion is being stated by me is self-evident, AG. And a Thropplenoggin's opinions are rarely shackled by humility.

Her work on Hear and Now has always seemed well up to par to me. I don't listen to Breakfast, so can't comment on her work for that programme.

Northender....Perhaps in similar fashion to cricketers (where they can challenge lbw decisions) we should get 2 chances within a thread to zap other peoples objectionable without redress ....it might solve a few of the spats....

You probably know the one about the two
                      monks, but I’ll tell it
                      anyway. They were
walking along one day when they came to
a stream where a young lady was
                      waiting, hoping that someone
                      would help her across.
                      Without hesitating, one
of the monks picked her up and
                      carried her across,
putting her down safely on the
                      other side.
                      The two monks continued
                      walking along, and after
                      some time the second one,
                      unable to restrain himself,
                      said to the first,
                      “You know we’re not
                      allowed to touch women;
why did you carry that woman
                      across the stream?”
                      The first monk replied:
                      “Put her down.
                      I did two hours ago.”

Indeed. She is an excellent interviewer (asks a relevant and interesting question, then shuts up, lets the interviewee reply and listens to their answer) and gave a superb double-edition of Discovering Music on the "Brandenburg" Concerti that Tovey, Bernstein and Hopkins would have been proud of.

It's only on Breakfast that she appears foolish - as does everyone else who appears in that format. "Early retirement" (ie, allowing her to be broadcast only on the later programmes in which she's so much better) would be a good thingfor everyone.
