    Exquisite Rückert Lieder

Just heard an exquisite Rückert Lieder from Janet BAker, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. Checked Amazon - it's with the 3rd symphony at £36! But available used for £4.50 - very tempting.

I only know the famous Barbirolli recording. I see I have noted down this quote from the Gramophone review. She was rehearsing Mahler with the maestro a few hours before he died. He indicated his score and remarked: "I've got every single breath you take marked in here".

Beautiful singing , a pity her less than idiomatic German spoils it for me .

I couldn't agree more! I had assumed I was listening to the Barbirolli recording - which I have - but it seemed better than I remembered and surely is. Somebody has bought that £4.50 used one [perhaps you Flosshilde?], but I see there is [or was!] a new copy available for £21.21 delivered.

Unfortunately not - I should know by now that a bargain has to be snapped up immediately, not thought about I'll wait until another bargain appears.

I know Ferrier only recorded three of them with Walter - but her Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen is a desert island disc of the first order .

I've been keeping an eye on it - has been around the £20 mark That £4.50 one must have been a mistake.

There's nothing like the Baker/Barbirolli performance of "Ich bin der Welt..."... time suspended, near the end ("ruuuuuuh".... )...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

                        I agree, tis wonderful Caliban.

Perhaps Irmgard Seefried's Deutsch will please Roehre rather more ...

Irmgard Seefried sings Mahler's Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen from the five Rueckert Lieder.

Every time I see her lip quiver just before the end, I fill up! :poot:

It does am51, but Baker/Barbirolli is a wunderful recording beyond any doubt
