Someone should let Simon know that John Ireland rather admired Bartok's music. There's a story Ireland told about the first performance of his own, somewhat Bartok-influenced Piano Sonatina at the 1932 ISCM - after which, arriving at his hotel room, he found an anonymous note telling him that if he wrote any more music like that, he, the author, would have him shot!

Thanks. Duly noted. Doesn't affect my own view.

I really enjoyed the orchestration of Bach's 'St. Anne' fugue today (BWV 552) - I missed who the performers. Anyone recall who it was?

Interesting that they chose that Craft/Phil version - and btw Thropples, the orchestration was Schoenberg's It comes from a Naxos CD of Schoenberg works, inc a couple of other Bach orchestrations...

... but for some bizarre reason, they don't include the 'St Anne' Prelude with the Fugue It's just as awesome!

If you are interested in the 'transcription of Bach' thing, Thropples, I couldn't recommend highly enough one of my favourite CDs:

There's the 'St Anne' Prelude as well as the Fugue, and fascinating arrangements by Elgar, Respighi, Reger, Bantock et al. And no bloody Stokowski!!

                  And brilliantly played and recorded.

                  Don't hesitate! It's absolutely magnificent!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                  Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Seconded, it's a spectacular CD - although it pains me to find myself in agreement with Mr Hurwitz

Great post, C. You've well and truly sold the disc to me. The Thropplenoggin coffers being somewhat barren at present, I was hoping to find this on Qobuz, and, lo and behold, there it was! The Bach transcription gods must have been smiling on me. That's my morning's listening sorted, then.

Hope Qobuz provides suitable audio quality to appreciate the disc. At the start of the Elgar orchestration, there are soft Bass Drum taps that always make me think of the big guns in France that were audible from Southern England in the 1914-18 war... softly chilling...

minor deities should not be underestimated.

                          enjoy the tunes.

ps..the Strauss thread is brilliant, though a bit rarified for the likes of me, but there look to be some great used bargains around, if the thropplewallet has anything at all in it !!
                          I picke up a FHG recommend for £1.66 in P and P.
