Tales From The Stave - Radio 4

If you'll allow me a brief sidestep to Radio 4, may I mention last Tuesday's "Tales From The Stave", which examined the manuscript of Vaughan Williams' Serenade To Music and told the story surrounding it, with contributions from Michael Kennedy and others.

It's available on the iPlayer at http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode...s_6_Episode_1/

    Lovely little programme.

a new series starting today with the Mozart Requiem (R4 11:30)
Frances Fyfield reveals the stories behind one of the world's most valuable manuscripts.

(I think there are 5 threads called 'Tales from the stave' - this could be the wrong one)

Listened in the car this am, featured Nigel Simeone of this parish among others, absorbing stuff. But since we were looking at manuscripts and comparing handwriting it might have been better still on telly.

Well, I think Tom Alban managed the interaction of music, history, investigators' reactions, archivist's contextualisation really well. We got a LOT about the different players who invested in the Requiem, and I suspect that on telly, there would have been endless pretty pix rather than info.

Well, probably. And it would have been presented by Simon Russell-Beale

Smetana Ma Vlast on today [3.3.2015].
Excellent voyage of discovery. Another beautifully put together programme in this series.
                    And SO Radio 3.
Why the heck are they not on R3 instead of wretched music-filled concert intervals or the puerile silliness of the Essential Classics interviews?

Programme only marred very slightly for me by the introduction: "handwritten manuscript"

As one of the participants in today's programme (and in the episode about the Mozart Requiem a couple of weeks ago), all I can say is thank you. You've no idea how gratifying it is to read such generous comments! We had a lot of fun making this one, as you can imagine - I suppose we were about 50 metres from the Vltava :)

Listening to the Tales from the Stave devoted to Der Rosenkavalier I was very much taken by the musical excerpts and wondered which recording was used.

                              Any ideas?
