In Tune

In Tune is a programme that I rarely listen to these days - like most of the R3 output. The glutinous sycophancy of SR sticks in the craw and the programme nearly always starts with a very familiar and over-played piece. What is worse is the announcement that SR "has just popped into the studio" during Afternoon on 3 to "tell us what's on In Tune". What follows is always an excruciating love-in between SR and the female presenter and if its KD the whole thing descends into a snorting giggle-fest that has me turning off.

I've been trying to trace the origins of Sean Rafferty's (along with others') style(s). I cannot find anything more apt that Blue Peter.

I would not wish to knock Blue Peter, though it too had issues. But BP was exclusively for children, whereas Radio 3 should be for thinking people of all ages.

As a child, I never liked to be talked down to ("Haven't you grown?). At 64, it is equally intolerable.

I switched on my FM tuner a few minutes ago only to hear a crooooooner who sounded as though she only a few microns away from her microphone. Naturally I assumed the tuner had been tampered with as I don't normally listen to Radio 2, so I retuned to Radio 3, only to find that it WAS Radio 3. When the sickly slippery voice stopped, Sean Rafferty then issued some soppy patronising platitudes, presumably to show how broad-minded and "cool" he is.

We get upset about Breakfast, but In Tune really is no better. Perhaps it should be renamed Afternoon Tea, or Afternoon Snack.

Alps it would have to be R3 - you wouldn't get crooners on R2 that time of day.

That's exactly the sort of programme on France Musique at 5 pm every weekday - I usually catch it when I'm driving home. It is perfect, a sort of round-up of the latest releases with just a little bit of comment from the presenter about what she thinks of the content and performance, but no more than a minute or two. With so many new releases to cover, the programme has no problem filling the slot five days a week.
