Lovely edition this evening, katie sure can pick some lovely pieces of music for our entertainment.

Katie Derham is joined by violinist Esther Yoo and pianist Jae Hong Park, playing live in the studio and Keelan Carew tells Katie about his cultural picks for the weekend.
Annoyingly listening to and commenting on radio 3...

She did muddle up Mendelssohn’s ‘Reformation’ and ‘Scottish’ symphonies though. She played the new recording from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and said they were playing the second movement from No.5 but we actually got No.3! Ah well…

Missed that! I thought the Vieuxtemps (?) Yankee Doodle piece was a lot of technical effort for very little musical reward. Very well played though.

November the 14th and the first Rutter Xmas Carol (Angel’s Carol ) makes an appearance on In Tune. Isn’t that a tad early ?

True but Nov 14th ! If you listen to a lot of R3 the amount of not very good Xmas music that’s played goes up every year. Not saying JR isn’t good but I’ve heard it all a thousand times. Wife’s choir is doing Shepherds Pipe this year as well….I gather the accompanist is finding the piano part a challenge.

How lovely to hear a Frenchman - the organist Naji Hakim - pronouncing Messiaen’s name correctly six times with the final en as in enfant rather than the current inaccurate Messyann favoured by Radio 3 presenters including Katie Derham (who is usually very precise in her foreign pronunciation. )

Now that Naji , who succeeded Messiaen as Organist at L’Église de La Saint-Trinité, has pronounced authoritatively perhaps R3 can finally get his name right.

Hakim's performance of Messiaen's La Nativité, recorded there, was a BBC MM CD (Vol 21, No 2):

I'm glad to hear that Katie Derham is precise in her pronunciation. If she were precise in her knowedge of classical music I'd feel we'd wasted less money on her.

Had the misfortune of hearing her last night: we're gonna listen to.....

Dear me - I can't imagine Clive Myrie saying that sort of thing!

By precise I meant to the point of actually slightly over doing it. She tends to go for the full accent in French, Spanish and Italian which made the Messiaen incident more telling. The majority of R3 presenters say -an rather than en at the end of his name. Given that he’s one of the most important composers of the 20th century and it’s French not Czech why can’t they get it right ? In French the word for child is pronounced enfon not anfon. There’s even a YouTube site ‘How To Pronounce French Composers’ Names’. I recommend it.

and bang on cue just had a Messyan from Georgia Mann.
