Afternoon on 3 - David Diamond

Enjoying today's Afternoon on 3. Although I've heard Appalachian Spring a few too many times on R3, Barber's Knoxville Summer of 1915 is always appreciated here at Bax Towers.

However I was somewhat surprised that Louise Fryer, an announcer I put in the first division of R3 personnel, admitted to never having heard of David Diamond before today.
How can that be one wonders? I'm no aficionado of American music but even I, a lowly listener, knew of his work. All somewhat worrying...

Worrying indeed, but under the present regime hardly surprising. American music has been largely confined to the popular composers and works in the past 3-4 years and the only Diamond that normally gets aired is Rounds, which comes up in the same performance on TTN 2 or 3 times a year. I would suggest that Louise Fryer makes a point of getting to know, his masterly chamber music including the String Quartets and some of the moving and powerful symphonies. She may be surprised by the quality of one of the US's finest composers.

Not really surprised,Radio 3 being how it is nowadays.

I can't figure out if it's good or bad that I don't remember the old days .

There is some criminal waste of airspace, though.
