'Privates on Parade' on In Tune 22/11/12

Wasn't Sean having fun with the cast of Privates on Parade (including Simon Russell Beale) this afternoon? He sounded absolutley in his element, with his guests playing along. A pity he didn't mention the rather tragic sub-text to the story - it makes what could be just a bit of fluff into something with some bite. Or perhaps this new production tones it down a bit?

Far be it from me to speak up for SR but...

I think there were several references to a sad ending.
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

I hope it doesn't - I've just booked two tickets for a chum for his 75th birthday and me for my 61st birthday just after New Year

SRB will have his work cut out to match Dennis Quilley and Roger Allam who played Captain Terri Dennis in the two previous productions that I've seen - but he is a multi-talented actor so I have high hopes

I'll catch the Rafferty-fest on iPlayer Flossie - thanks for the tip

Ooops - I missed that - there were points when I wasn't able to listen.

I saw it with Dennis Quilley; SRB sounds well up to the mark. I'll book for it when it comes to Glasgow.

What time was it on roughly, or do I have to LA the whole lot?

I got a cheap ticket for a matinee when I'm in London for the St John's Christmas Festival.

To answer my own question - an hour and a half in, in case anyone else wants to hear it.

Was lucky to be taken by my dad to see the original production at the RSC/Aldwych. Amazing cast - Dennis Quilley, Nigel Hawthorne and Joe Melia who has just left us.

I was all of fourteen but I've never laughed some much in a theatre. Terrible shame the made such a hash of the film.

The RSC, Shapkespeare aside, was producing such good theatre in those days, then there was that terrible move to the Barbican which took them out of the West End.

Quite the reverse, I would have said. Adrian Noble's decision to move the company away from the Barbican has been a disaster. They had an excellent theatre there, with good sight lines, just the right size for Shakespeare. I remember being riveted by Samuel west in Hamlet, and lovely productions of the History Plays. The decision meant that the RSC has succeeded in finding a London home, having to "borrow" whatever space becomes available.
