I mentioned Schabel, together with one or two others. But having sat through rehearsal and concert of Schabel's 1st symphony, I can't disassociate him from that. I preferred his piano playing

I remember a discussion of recordings of a Mozart piano concerto on "Interpretations on record" in the '70's. One of the two people remarked, after listening to the particularly florid Schnabel cadenza, "He must have had a good lunch before recording that"

Two other notables to add to the 'missing' list are Andrei Gavrilov and Ivo Pogorelich, both of whom attracted degrees of praise and approbrium in almost equal measure. Both were mercurial artists when young and health issues played a part in their decline. However, on a good day I'd be very happy to sit with either or both as they played, weaving their particular magic.

I'm pleased to say that Gavrilov was over in UK recently giving recitals and teaching at that well-known conservatoire The Red Hedgehog in Highgate. Pogorelich appears from time to time, shaven-headed and a pale shadow but there is youtube evidence of the old magic.

I heard Malcuzynski "Live" in Leeds Town Hall (the first time I'd ever been in that venue) in August 1976 - playing the Liszt A minor Concerto with the SNO/Gibson. Rach #2 after the interval: excellent concert!

I was waiting for someone to suggest Joyce Hatto. After all she was as good as several pianists.

Not sure if Youri Egorov has been mentioned.
He died tragically young.
This set is great but it's the only recording of his that I have .

Thanks for this suggestion, ER. He left USSR to get away from the homophobia he experienced there and finally settled in Amsterdam. He was diagnosed with AIDS there and apparently, having gathered some friends together for a party, quietly took some hemlock and died.

This page indicates that he made at least 14 CD recordings - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youri_Egorov . It also does not mention the hemlock suggestion - though that doesn't mean it might not be true. Perhaps he really did want to follow in Socrates footsteps.

There are several of his recordings on Spotify, including some Brahms violin sonatas with Emmy Verhey. I can post links if needed.
