    Is it Essential?

... as one might, i was abed and wondering why it was called essential when it started with the bugler thingy this morning .... a misnomer methought ....

what should it be called? .... Morning on 3 [no pretence to authority that is scarce deserved when you fluff the ending of a Haydn Symphony quite so badly and the playlist is missing after the Haydn]

the more my mind meanders the more i disapprove of the name .... it is false

I assume that Sony didn't copyright the name and it became usable when they stopped issuing them. So it's the Basic Repertoire which is essential to every collection, then ... It sends out the message: if you don't know anything about classical music - start here and you'll be guided through the essential 'everything you need to know about classical music', like Bugler's .... ah ....

Another question: why is it when I get to the bottom of any page there's: You might also like - Late Junction?

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

It states in the booklet with my Colin Davis recording of Haydn sym 102 that the surprise ending looks forward to Beethoven.Poor Sarah Walker, itcertainly surprised her today. I hope she knows about that symphony with several'joke' endings. And yes Essential is another word like Iconic, rendered meaningless by over usage IMO.

Having listened , I have to say though that was absolutely the right way to carry it off - admit you goofed, apologise and pass on to the next item. I think that's quite "R3".

i agree ff, but still feel that it is misnamed .... and the producer could fix the playlist and that bugle thing was very workers playtime [nowt wrong with that either but not 'essential classic' eh?]

I promise you - that was my thought too! As I didn't know the piece I wondered at first if it was a new signature tune ...

Producer and presenter are working to a brief and it's the brief, not them, that leads to trouble. The Palestrina Stabat Mater, the Four Last Songs and the Haydn symphony might be regarded as 'essential classics' by some definitions of the term. And perhaps the Royal Hunt and Storm. Can't see that much else is. Still I don't suppose it matters too much if new listeners think John Johnson and King Fred of Prussia are up among the musical gods, with Bugler's Holiday and the overture to Euryanthe playing constantly in the background.

.. i don't object to the selection or the guests just calling it Essential Classics .... it is a presenter driven playlist prog with chatty bits and not too much else oh yep competitions too ... Morning on 3 does it justice

Ah. Well I'd prefer Radio 3 to buck up its ideas about what has apparently taken over as the main (I think we call it the flagship) morning programme (3 hours long).

I can't see what anyone could have found 'daunting' about the old Morning on 3. For that time in the morning it used to be about right. Looking at Mon 27 Jan 2003, PG played 12 pieces in 3 hours (quite a few 'essential classics' among them ), plus the new half-hourly news headlines at 7.30 and 8.30. Followed by CotW at 9am and CD Masters at 10am. Not a bad schedule, from my point of view.

Nor from my point of view either. Although I don't listen to Essential so am not entitled to comment and have stopped listening to Saturday Classics and, how many times on Breakfast do we have to have the Sorcerer's Apprentice? Why not just call the 9am programme "If you loved that, you'll love this"

... would that it were that ambitious! - More often it's "As you loved that, here it is again. And again. And again. And again. And again."

I think the only thing that's essential about the programme is that it is (along with Breakfast), absolutely essential to switch it off.

Assuming the radio is on in the first place, sc, which in my case it isn't (and it remains off until noon at least).
