its kind of a pity, given that it has 2 presenters who could make excellent radio.
I quite like Sarah Walkers style, and RC of course is a walking encyclopedia.....
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

Nor me, FF. But -- 'daunting'? Is that the same as 'inaccessible' or worse/better? Oh, to hell with all these nesh people who are frightened by a bit of difficulty! Who promised us that life was supposed to be easy, anyway?

Sounds like someone at a party making their first and probably last attempt at a pass!

It's 9 minutes after 9 o/c and it's absolutely essential that I do not have to put up with Sarah Walker's sharp intakes of breath any more.

                  Gosh, that's better!!

                    a sensible move this morning

to make sure we hear the whole of Bruckner 4, the guest spot only lasted 15 minutes

at least that's how I've read it

Good news, but I forgot, so have joined it a few minutes in. Will listen from the start later on.

A very odd entry on the playlist, though:

Symphony No. 5 (2nd movement, Allegretto) Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Karel Ancerl (conductor)

Performers: Supraphon 1106762 Composer: Bruckner Performers: Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Gunter Wand (conductor)

                        Shostakovich

                        Eh?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I work on the basis of listening to the music, not the presenter - on this basis I hear some great stuff on Essential Classics, not three hours each morning admittedly but picking and mixing, easier via iplayer, and at least now they usually play the BaL choice in full, and EC does mainly do full works, other than the annoying guest spots and quizzes.

I haven't listened to the Ancerl Shostakovich 5 for a long time although I do have it in my collection. What struck me this morning listening to the 2nd movement was how sedate it was. I know that the music doesn't have the ferocity of the scherzo in no. 10, but this did sound rather dull. I must listen to the complete performance, it might well work better heard in context.

But Shosty needed of course to play it safe with the 5th - it still remains a remarkable document of its time in terms of symphonic coherence alone, leaving aside all the subliminal messages musical archaeologists have managed to unearth since it was composed.
