The price I quoted is inc P&P, Dave2002

And I stick to my original claim. Handel made great music, but Sir Colin made it sound great.
As did Sargent, Christie, McCreesh, Mackerras and Bert Twigg (Chorus Master of the Little Gumption on the Ouse Choral Society, est 1887). All of whom would have had to twiddle their thumbs if it weren't for Handy George.

And any performance of Messiah (or Brandenburg #6) no matter how good, is "only" a performance: the score is every possible performance.

Nah. The score is just the recipe, it's the chef that turns it into something tasty.

OK, you twisted my arm! Now ordered. I'll have to put Goebel's MAK version on hold for a while.
At least I can listen to that from streaming services.

                'DREAM TEAMS':

I simply don't understand why we don't have a whole selection of Brandenburg #6 recordings featuring two 'universally acknowleged - world class' viola players rather than the usual 'upgraded orchestral players' however competent and worthy!

                Some hypothetical pairings would be:

                1) BOTH Oistrakhs - David and Igor ( Ok they are/were violinists but both have played the viola)
                2) Pinchas Zukerman and Itzhak Perlman
                3) Cecil Aronowitz and Peter Schidlof
                4) Michael Tree and Paul Doktor
                5) Walter Trampler and Yehudi Menuhin
                6) Yuri Bashmet and Kim Kashkashian
                7) James Durrant and Watson Forbes
                8) Roger Chase and Monica Huggett

So what's wrong with Monica Huggett and Pavlo Beznosiuk? That's the pairing on the OAE Vergin Veritas double CD set of Brandenburgs.

Roger and Monica - after many years of playing together in the now sadly defunct 'Hausmusik' ensemble - tend to play in a 'horizontal' way ( and thank goodness for that!) whereas Pavlo is very much a 'vertical' player.
Hence the ( very audible) mismatch of playing styles on the CD that you ( very well-meaningly) cite.

What do you mean by vertical and horizontal players???? I know a few drunks who play on their backs - is that horizontal?

I restrained myself from asking that question ...

A vertical female viola player! I'm tempted to say I prefer them horizontal, but then the sound tends to travel upwards ...

Who is the fiddler? I sort of recognise him. Must be good, no head on chinrest, and very relaxed.
