    Delboy at the opera.

Thats what we are getting. If anyone remembers the episode of that foul 'Fools and Horses' programme where Delboy attends an opera (presumably to impress someone, not least himself) throughout which he is continually nodding off until he hears a famous jaunty chorus that everyone knows, whereupon he suddenly wakes up saying 'oh yeah, i like this one - rom-pom pom pom-pa-pom..!'

If you want to laugh at Delboy, i find that far funnier than the apparently famous 'falling throught the bar' gag. Yet this is the mentality that R3 is actually aiming to attract!

I think the hallmark of great comedy is when you still laugh yourself silly at a particular gag which you've already seen countless times and know perfectly well what's coming. If you would like a really good example of the quality of John Sullivan's writing, watch the 10 minutes or so preceding Philip Pope's song in the nightclub. There's something missing from those 10 minutes - and for a very good reason. And as for the 'Brief Encounter' moment under the clock....
You may well be right about R3's attitude to opera, but please don't cast nasturtiums at those of us who actually think that 'Only Fools and Horses' is a very finely crafted piece of popular entertainment.
    You know it makes sense....

Like Fawlty Towers, Only Fools and Horses never, [or hardly ever], fails to make me laugh. Thanks for the reminder of a wonderful sit-com.

Agreed, some top flight writing. In my Top 10:

Del: One of my most favouritest meals is Duck à l'Orange, but I don't know how to say that in French

          Rodney: It's canard

Del: You can say that again bruv!

(You have to say it out loud with no French accent )
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Reminds me of the joke about the driver of a Rolls-Royce who pulls in to a filling station.

"Nice motor", the attendant says, "must of cost you a few bob".

"Nah. It's a company car" the driver replies.

"Blimey", says the attendant, "what company do you work for?"

"I work for Cunard" says the customer.

"Well I work ******* hard as well", replies the attendant, "but I don't get a company car!"

Aren't we just sharing in your own appreciation of "Only Fools and Horses" as a deftly and amusingly-written and characterised piece of work?
