I'm sure you aren't in a minority. I imagine most of us spend some time shouting at the radio, indicating to perkily intrusive presenters that we do not care about what they think's "absolutely incredible" music, and would rather they shut up and just let the stuff speak for itself.

The chat is for the small minority of lonely, isolated people who benefit from babble. Radio 3 is now one of those sad channels which tries to justify itself through social therapy, rather than art. (Thanks to the toadying Arts Council, subsidised live theatre is in the same, sinking boat.)

For what it's worth - I'm neither lonely nor isolated, and I don't think I've ever shouted at my radio in my (now pretty long) life. I have no trouble blanking out the babble and 'tuning in again' when it finishes. The trails are very annoying, but I've simply come to accept them.

YLE has the best 'presenters' - and the most interesting selection of music...just about all complete works, apart from the occasional scene from Handel or somesuch.

I listen most mornings and the chap is brief and to the point, as far as my Finnish will allow! He sounds like 'our own' Mr Ultimate Calm, Ólafur Arnalds. He plays a piece, leaves a respectful gap, tells us what we've been listening to, leaves a respectful gap, tells us what we are to hear next, when its finished, leaves a respectful gap, and so on.

So far this morning Berwald, Wolf, Telemann, Loewe, Pergolesi, Kuhlau, Handel, Glinka, JS Bach, Tchaikovsky, Skalkottas, Bright, Sjögren (...no I didn't either!)..........

I like the distinction made in Finland between extraverts and introverts -

An introvert Finn when in discussion looks at his shoes.

An extravert Finn looks at his interlocutor's shoes.

I think that national trait was established before the territorial onslaught of the 'trainer'......now they look merely to establish whether they're talking to an 'Adidas' or 'Nike' person.

Agree it's an excellent station and it's my go-to in the mornings. I suspect, however, that it's all played from a pre-loaded playlist including the 'presenter' introductions which will have been pre-recorded and dropped into the playlist. It all sounds just a bit 'mechanical' to me and the same voice seems to be there for most of the time!

I think it's obvious sometimes that it is automated.....a radio station for the modern world! - or do we prefer a 'hands-on' EC laden with personal opinion and soppiness.

Another AI voice (female) usually takes over at 11.30......the male one goes off for a pickled herring and vodka break.

Yes, I've noticed the female voice appearing from time to time. If I had the choice between that female AI voice and GM's inconsequential witterings I think I'd go for the AI!

'Have you met her new boy friend?. I'm sure he's very clever, he's definitely good-looking, and he's probably got a good job, but ... well, I'm not sure he's a very NICE person, if you know what I mean'.
