Well, the Tractor Boys were in decline for quite a few years, but have now risen rapidly - there's always hope!

... bad science there, serial : dinosaurs were already birds in posse - what God promised she would do was introduce mammals...

          A good additional point.

This morning, I went for an MRI scan. Everything was done efficiently and with sensitivity. I was put in a kind of surgical straight jacket, my ears plugged (sort of), and given an emergency button to hold, as the staff have to leave the room during the scan. Just before the machine was switched on, some unwelcome music entered my head. I politely protested immediately. The operator asked what my preferred radio station was, so I said Radio 3.

Wonderful sounds then entered my head (along with the machine’s strange but unavoidable noises).

But I’d forgotten that it was Saturday, and when the music stopped, the jabbering voice of Tom Service dominated my brain. Never mind, I thought, he’ll soon shut up, and then there’ll be more music. But no, he carried on and on. Normally, I would reach for the controls to silence the intruder, or even to change to Classic FM, but I was buried in this science fiction machine with nothing to save me but the emergency button, but I couldn’t justify that. The torture had to be endured, and it went on and on - the longest 20 minutes of my life!

Sorry to hear about the accompaniment to your scan. I always make a note of when TS is on the air and make alternative arrangements, which was, I realize, difficult in your case!,

Cruel and unusual punishment indeed. The stuff of nightmares: Service gabbling and no access to the off switch

Best wishes for the outcome of the less-stressful medical business of the day
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I did an MRI here in France last year - though you get an appointment really quickly, they don't offer the same luxury of choosing a radio station. Mind you, I'd rather have had just all the strange noises from the MRI rather than Service!

I hope the rumours aren't true that he's going to be piped into A&E departments in order to encourage 'time wasters' to flee and cut the waiting times for people who really do need to be there.

Let's not forget that we once had a knowledgeable member who used regularly to object to all the criticisms piled on Mr S and was complimentary towards him. No like? No listen.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

My point was that in today's broadcasting the Programme is the Presenter and the Presenter is the Programme. I'm probably a hardline extremist in this (if so, it makes up for being a wishy-washy moderate in everything else), but I think the, in this case, music content is important and the best presenters don't want to be commented on or noticed, and aren't. Once people do start commenting, it's clear that these are just personal preferences, one man's meat &c, and opinions are pretty uninteresting to others - unless they share them, pro or anti, about an individual. At which point they pile in with their love-ins and hate-ins .

Content in this context is the music chosen and the format in which it's presented (all short pieces, a few long pieces, live or recordings, presenter input limited to music comment and information or other interposed speech features of various sorts, in which case it becomes a magazine programme rather than a music programme).
