James May - Champion of Radio 3

Who'd've thunk it? In answer to Sarah Walker's silly question as to how Radio 3 could get Top Gear fans to listen to classical music, James May has just said that R3 shouldn't change in order to try and get new listeners. In fact, he echoed French Frank's very words, that if you turn on R3 and don't want to listen to what's on at the time, just listen to something else. How it should be.

I wasn't listening, but do you think he meant change from what it is now or from what it used to be ?

      I'll write and ask him

Surely, the answer is blindingly obvious: play classical music on Top Gear which is what they listen to (RW is coordinator for classical music across the BBC - so he could push for it!).
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

That was the ambiguity. I wish he'd gone a step further and said that recent attempts to popularise were misguided (though that would have been ironic given that his very presence was part of it)

He came close when saying that if Walton's 'Popular Song' came on, he wanted to scream and smash the radio. If only he'd added Copland's 'Hoedown' et al.

Anyway in general James May is a Good Thing. I would love to have his frank view on Morning Call "I was emptying my bowels one morning in a small hotel in the Carpathians when the sounds of Ravel's 'Bolero' drifted in. My life was never the same again" with Sara/Petroc...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

It would be fun if he were already on here. I think he would be a bracing Forum member. Maybe suggest it, FF. I'm sure he has much to contribute.

Yes he would be an asset to the Forum. I was making toast and not listening properly but I revised my opinion of the Top Gear lads, or one of them. He sounds a good all-round sort of person, lots of opinions, lots of fun to listen to.

It says on Monday's RT page that he is a keen flautist and keyboard player and likes early music.

I already knew he was an all-rounder with a music degree and a penchant for early music and amateur pianism. His comments about playing Scott Joplin rags in his early teens such that they are still in his 'muscle-memory', car enthusiasms etc make me feel that he's somewhat of a soul-mate.

Steady as she goes, french frank - we may get Roger Wright doing his fastest lap in his lycra and their reasonably priced car - Mr Pee would be thrilled

That might well be the answer to Dr W: that Top Gear fans already do listen to Radio 3 ...

                    We do indeed.

no, too old for that, so

PS While I applaud his view on R3, I can't stand these chatty morning programmes.

I'll try and corner him when I see him at the flying club. James is a more than capable pilot!

Look out, their [Top Gear] idea of entertainment might be the LSO in a double-decker bus jumping 20 caravans....

The old LSO that I knew would probably enjoy that. I think the first cello who drove a very nifty Jeep was in the LSO; that or the BBCSO. Willem de Mont by name.

Wasn't there a violinist in the Philharmonia who had been a pilot during the Second World War? I believe it was he who challenged Karajan on his behaviour leading the Maestro to reconsider his position with the Orchestra.

Clem Relf, who was with the early Philharmonia for many years, was in one of the Services, captured, and had to work on the infamous Railway as a POW. A bit hazy about the details, was it in Burma? He would have faced up to Karajan or anyone.
